try www.checkbook.org (aka Washington Consumer's Checkbook magazine) for their local ratings/rankings of the best electricians (and other service professionals) in Loudoun County area.

sorry, I haven't used any electricians in Loudoun yet, so can't really comment on quality. However, I've used Checkbook's rating/ranking system to hire other individual business professionals (i.e. plumbers, dry cleaners, doctors, auto mechanics, etc.) in Loudoun. They've been right on target regarding quality and other measurements over the past several years.

checkbook magazine is a non-profit research company that does not accept any advertising. (IMHO, they don't do very good advertising/pr of their own publication, either, but that's okay.) We found this resource by word of mouth from another life-long Metro D.C. resident several years ago. It's one of Washington's best kept secrets.

The Loudoun County Library system might have the magazine’s back issues on file, if one does not want to subscribe.

Best of luck in your search

fyi, the two highest rated electrical firms in the spring/summer 2004 checkbook magazine are Becker Electric of Alexandria VA at (703) 683-5888, and L&S Electric of Falls Church VA at (703) 237-0011, for the Virginia area closest to Ashburn (for price and quality). At the time the report was published, these two companies also had zero complaints on file with either the www.bbb.org or the local gov't consumer offices.

Although we haven't worked with either of these companies yet, we decided today that we need to get some electrical work done in our home office this month. So, we're getting bids from them. After the work has been completed, we'll post an update on well they did or didn't do, from our experience.

Has anyone else used either of these companies before?

well, Becker just called me and they don't offer service in Ashburn -- Ashburn is too far away and they have enough business in Alexandria already, unfortunately. too bad - so they are now crossed off my list.

L&S Electrical (although backed up with bookings until May 2005) does indeed service homes in Ashburn, and they are coming out to give us an estimate in early April... we'll let you know what happens

Try calling Craig Fladager, Ashburn Electric, 703-969-1812. He's an advertiser in the Broadlands Newsletter classifieds.

I've used Craig of Ashburn Electric on numerous occasions (installed recessed lighting, replaced hanging fixtures, installed wall sconces). His prices are reasonable and he does GREAT work. He's the one repair/contractor-type in the area I can recommend with NO reservations.

Be leary of Michael E Sons - VERY high rates and not the best level of service - example: $155 charge to install a dimmer...at those rates I am in the wrong business

I have used Creager Electrical Service for the past 10 years. Experienced, licensed electrician and they service Ashburn. I have never had to wait more than a week or so to get them out. You can reach them at 703-698-7654.

We used Mike Breece of Breece Electric to replace a ceiling fan and install whole-house surge protection last year. The price was fair, and we were happy with the results. He's also a Broadlands resident. No e-mail that I know of, but his number is 703-723-8222.
