We changed the front door handle on our townhouse and the footprint of the new one is slightly smaller than the old one, so now there's an unpainted part. We plan to repaint the door this spring. Are there any specific limitations on what color we can paint it? Or does it just have to be in reasonably good taste?

You can always paint it the original color or at the least VERY close to it without submitting an application (this would be considered maintenance).

If you do wish to change the color, you will need to submit an application. And if you do, the new color "should" ;) be consistant with the neighborhood colors or with the house color scheme.

Simple enough, I think we'll just repaint the same color then.

    Thanks!

What about metal? Our lock completely broke not to mention the very cheap handle on the front door that looked horrible. We want to replace it with brushed nickel (knocker, kickplate, and lock) which would match all the hardware we have in our house. Do we have to apply for that as well? Even if the style is almost the same?

Yes, you need to submit an application as you are planning to modify the exterior from what the home was initially built with.

The rule of thumb is when in doubt, just submit an application. Even if it turns out that your change wouldn't need one, you've gone through the process and have the paper trail and peace of mind that down the road, nobody will question your change.

We were considering adding a storm door to out SFH in Southern Walk. Thinking either Pella or Larson (nice, heavy, solidly-locking doors). I'm sure that we need to submit an application, but are there any guidelines anywhere on types or looks? I like the half roll-screen doors, but I've only seen a few houses with storm doors and they're full glass. Is that standard? We're new to the neighborhood. Thanks!

Full glass is the standard, others are considered on a case by case basis. An application is required and if you plan to do something other than full glass, please provide detailed information with specifications and pictures. A manufacturer's sell sheet works well.

We submitted an application to have a storm door that you can slide up or down to expose the screen and we had no problems getting it approved. I do see more of the single pain glass storm doors, but we wanted to be able to leave the front door open on nice days.

The problem (and not really a problem) was with the installation of the door. The doorframe had to be built out to accommodate the storm door so that was an additional expense. We used Home Depot for the entire thing and it was reasonable and quick.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's exactly why we wanted a half screen door as well.
