I was wondering if there were any nice / moderate hiking trails around the broadlands area for taking the dogs out for jaunt in the woods.

We have been through the great falls (VA side) area, C&O trail, and various trails through Ashburn. I haven't ventured much to the west, but would love to try something different now that the weather has cooled off some.

I've taken the dogs out to Shenandoah, but its a bit of jaunt to head out there, and the dogs are limited by their stature (corgis == 4 inch ground clearance). Plus they like the sense of "discovery" when we go someplace new (I think the owners do to :)).

There's a great trail around the lake at Burke Lake park. It's a little bit of a drive (~40 minutes) for a 4.5 mile hike.

Harpers Ferry...the Maryland Heights trail...it's got to be one of the prettiest and most underused trails in the National Park System. Technically, pups must be on leash, but there are plenty of remote areas where they can romp...just don't forget that you need to "scoop the poop" :policelight:

You could try the Manassas Battlefield area on the way to Bull Run Park (about 20 minutes South down 659 south of 50 to Rt 234 South). Lots of trails out there on which I assume dogs are allowed as there are always tons of horses there.

I forgot about bull run... I will need to check on the pet friendliness of the park.

As for the trail at Harper's Ferry, that looks intriguing. I will definitely put that on the to do list.
