My wife and I just had a very enjoyable night out at the American Flatbread wine dinner, co-sponsored by WineSmith. The dining room wasn't half full. With the slumping economy and the demise of Cafe Panache, we're getting fearful that independent restaurants like Flatbread will struggle to survive through the economic downturn. I just wanted to post an endorsement for AFB and encourage local residents to patronize this and other independent restaurants that don't necessarily have the corporate backing to weather the storm. We certainly love the chain restaurants when we're dining out with the kids, but there really are very few places within stumbling distance worthy of 'babysitter night.'

This is my plea to all the locals. Grab a lunch, get takeout for the family, call the babysitter and head out to AFB for the evening. Let's support these local culinary landmarks so we're not left with a sea of chain restaurants when the markets finally turn around.

    Cheers,
    SchwarzFamily

We love AFB and agree with the sentiment. This actually goes for all our other local restaurants, too. We've been making a point to visit places like Cafe Opera and Nagoya. I tend to forget those places are there and would be very sad to see them go.

The one thing I would like to see at AFB is a little wider menu, maybe an couple more appetizers to chose from and maybe a couple of different salads to also select from. As for the Flatbread (pizza) don't change a thing, they are great, and the options are wonderful!

    Pizza is great ..
Menu selection is fair / poor
    Service is fair
Drink selection is fair / poor

I guess like everybody ..when time gets tough .. they have room to improve ... my two cents ...

it's a nice place, but they do need a bigger menu and lower prices. it's kind of hard to support local businesses that charge high prices. just like they need help in these times, we need to save in these times as well. it's difficult all around. sad to see the local businesses struggle, but lower prices all around would certainly make going out easier (esp. when we have to pay a babysitter)

prices are at least somewhat a result of the ridiculous rents the greedy plazalords were charging. their time is a comin tho . . .

We get carry out from there. Their pizza is always good but last week it was AWESOME! I have had dreams about the sausage pizza before but this was the best I ever had from them.

They use fresh, local, organic ingredients which sometimes limits the extent of their menu, but means that if you support AFB, you are also supporting local growers. If you have ideas for how they can make your experience better, let them know.

The drink selection may be limited but what they do have for beer/wine you can rarely find elsewhere.

Had me a couple of Bell's dark brown ales (YUMMY!) last night waiting for carry-out.

I love AFB because it's one place I feel 100% comfortable taking my two little monkeys. They know us, they welcome us, they giggle every time my boys just trot right over to our "usual" table. They now have kids' sized pizzas too, so the munchkins can have their own. Not sure how long they've done that but I just learned about it last week or so.

It feels like home, I love that the bulk of their food is all natural, and I especially love that I can take the kids and don't have to get a babysitter. In fact, I think we're going tonight! I could use some of that yummy potato rosemary flatbread.

I agree this place is awesome. They know us there too and we always have an excellent meal and a great time. I think their prices are in line with the quality.

Also want to mention that they have good happy hour prices on good beer (Bells, Old Dominion, Dog Fish) and wine by the glass. (sorry I don't remember the exact prices though).

I'd also recommend attending one of their upcoming events. We went to the Oregon wine dinner last night and the Dogfishead beer dinner in late August. Both were excellent events with great drinks. They also brought out some unique pizzas not on the menu - last night we had a pizza with ham, gorgonzola, and concord grapes - it was amazing. The events run ~$50 per person, but are well worth it!
