Ashburn campus isn't going anywhere. We were bought by Verizon who doesn't have an IP network of it's own...if they lay off all of us and close the facility, who is going to run the network? They will probably get rid of redundant departments (maybe payroll, billing, HR, some sales/ordering)...I read one estimate of 7000 globally, but this is where the core of our network is, you can't just abandon the facility without some major planning and training.

Why can't you? Verizon isn't known for its brilliant decisions.

The sole reason they bought MCI was for the instant enterprise class IP backbone they would acquire...you can't evacuate and close the facility where that backbone is anchored and supported upon acquisition, which won't be for another year anyway. This is a non-issue.

You're missing the point. Just because it wouldn't be smart to do, doesn't mean they won't do it. The sole reason Verizon does anything is to make a buck, regardless of what they advertise. They're being or have been sued in multiple markets for making bad decisions. Don't assume anything when dealing with them.

Brim, how many people has Worldcom laid off since 2000? Haven't property values tripled since then?

I don't believe Verizon is in the social services business. They exist to make a buck. There is nothing wrong with that.

Every account that I have read has hinted at Verizon relocating their headquarters from Manhatten to Ashburn (to be closer to the Federal government).

That is correct. There were articles several months ago in the Post about Verizon looking to relocate it's corporate HQ from NY/NJ (where it is reportedly selling its current corporate campus) and was looking for a new campus site in Northern VA. Fairfax and Loudoun were competing to attract Verizon. This acquisition will give them the internet backbone and business customer base they have been wanting, PLUS an existing campus with room to expand! I'd be shocked if they do not relocate HQ to Ashburn.

When I saw the purchase announced in the paper, I remembered the coverage when Sprint and Nextel merged, to the effect that now something was big enough to compete with Verizon. This should be interesting to watch!

Oh, please. Since when does use of question marks and the word 'presumably' demonstrate that the writer is speaking in absolutes and is "crying"? That's why I asked if anyone has any information on the situation because I DIDN'T!! I was asking a question. Geez.

Take it easy ... its a stressful situation for alot of people in and around Ashburn, lets not make it any worse.

And, as has been mentioned, there is some good that may come out of this. If Verizon does want to move out of NY/NJ, then there are some who may not want to move in the areas of HR and Payroll, etc. So that means that there may be opening for those who fulfill that role here.

Hey, if Verizon DOES relocate into the MCI building, all those relocating employees will be house shopping.....potential for renaming this Topic.

You could say the same about the airline lay-off's as well.

Barbara's right!! Two large companies near each other competing for business. Should only mean a benefit to the consumer!!
Why I'd be willing to guess that same theory would apply to hospitals as well!!! Oops, sorry. Wrong thread!![:p]

Three weeks ago Verizon was quoted as saying that they intended
to keep their headquarters in NYC which will hold 1,500 employees:
    http://www.verizon-media.com/iweb/news/20050125.shtml

However, they also indicate they plan on moving some key operations
to another location soon to be announced:
My guess is that they will be moving a significant number of
management employees to the MCI campus.

    Cliff, are you projecting? ;)
No, my interest in the merger etc is because either Verizon is hard-selling our community on a long term bulk contract, or the guys they're talking to in our community are hard-selling it for them, and we keep NOT hearing what it will do to our fees, and nobody is talking much about how it will dig up the entire community if we enter into a long and large enough contract for a fiber retrofit upfront...etc. Best of luck to everybody up there as this unfolds.
