It's been a family tradition to go to an actual pumpkin patch around Halloween for some time now. We moved from a country area here to the broadlands and I was wondering if anyone knew of pumpkin patches in Nothern Virginia. (And I don't mean the "Pumpkin Patch" that's in the Village plaza LoL)

There are several in the area:
Layng's Flower Farm off off Evergreen Mills Rd.
"Pumpkinville" at the Leesburg Animal Farm Park in Leesburg.
    Cox Farms in Centreville
    Great Country Farm in Bluemont.

I haven't been to Layng's yet - going on Monday. But the other 3 have hayrides, pumpkins, cider, slides, mazes, etc. At Great Country Farm you can pick-your-own pumpkin from the patch. They also have animals to pet & feed and ponies to ride. If you'd like more info (address/websites), email me and I will get them for you.

There's an article about these, with web sites and phone numbers, in the October Broadlands newsletter, which should be in mailboxes today. We go every year to both the Leesburg Animal Park and Cox's Farm. Both are great! Cox's is much bigger, has more things to do (esp slides) for a wider range of ages, and gets pretty crowded on weekends. Leesburg also has fun things to do but on a smaller scale, I like their hayride the best, and they have a great petting zoo. Layng's I have not been to yet.

Cox's is basically across the road from our community, and even though the weekends are crowded, they have a variety of music for all ages, often with singalongs, plus a small stage with performers like a wonderful unicycle/juggling lady, again with kid volunteer participation. Last year my son got to try milking a cow at one stage area. A wide variety of hay-bale constructs--climbing, rolling, swinging over, sliding down or into. Barn tour, with horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, the works. Goat area, with feed and petting. Face painting, giant bubble stations, pony rides on weekends, baby nursing and changing area under a huge painted wooden pole-teepee pavillion. We always go (sometimes more than once!) and spend a day--eat there, with a variety of food vendors, plus all the apples, cider and popcorn you can hold, as well as kettle corn, fresh caramel apples, and other yummies. Country/farmers market with jams, pies etc. They opened early this year, so they're already up and running. If you go, prepare to have a great time (and get dirty!)

    FYI

Cox is charging $11 per person 2 and over this year on weekends and Columbus Day. We went last year and had a BLAST, but $33 for three of us (including a 2.5 year old) is a lot.

We went to Pumpkinville last weekend and had a great time. The fee includes admission to the animal park (which is normally $7 or $8 for adults anyway). $9 for 2 and over on weekends.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm excited to hear there's a variety of places to go. Can't wait for that newsletter :) . I think I'll try out Cox even though it is a little pricey. Thanks again!

Just got back from Layng's Flower Farm. My 2 1/2 year old LOVED it. This "farm" is definitely geared to the younger set. It is quite a bit smaller than Cox Farm & Pumpkinville. The only animals they have are a very friendly dog, a pygmie goat and some chickens. There are 4 large slides, a tunnel, hay bale maze, a little tykes playground, a moon bounce, pumpkin painting, a hay ride, a country store and refreshments. They've got a large selection of pumpkins and tons of mums. One great thing is the location - they are right off Evergreen Mills Rd - took us less than 20 minutes to get there and that was mainly due to a construction delay on Belmont Ridge Rd. Admission is $5 on the weekdays and $7 on the weekends - children under 2 are free. If you go to their website, there's a coupon for a free admission. (just add the www and a dot com to layngsflowerfarm ;) )
