I would like to receive recommendations or suggestions on where people have had a good experience buying a mattress. This will be for a spare room and will not be used "everday". Thanks

I don't know if there is such a thing as a "good" experience buying a mattress!

1-800-Mattres (leave off the last 's' for savings) claims to beat any one else's price. I bought all mine from Costco. The price match guarantee doesn't apply to wholesalers.

I actually had a really good experience over at Baer's Mattress Den in Leesburg. They are family owned and located in the same shopping center as Michael's and Stein Mart.

I purchased a full set for my daughter's bedroom and was quite impressed at the absolute lack of hard sell and the customer service after the fact (the box spring was damaged during delivery). So far the bed has held up well over the past three years.

The last time I was in the shop was to buy a new bedframe for another bed and I had to wait as there was only one saleperson and he was waiting on another family shopping for a bed. I was happy that I was recognized and told I'd have to wait a little while until he was finished with his first customers. I got to observe that my experience when bed buying seemed to be the norm for them.

The twin mattresses we purchased at Costco were much more reasonable priced than Mattress Discounter, and they are really comfortable. My only good experience buying mattresses!

    I would not recommend Baer.

afgm is correct. We bought a King size Sleep Number bed manufactured by Select Comfort. We both love it and comes in handy when I am having a restless night. It has dual chambers and you can adjust each partner's side according to whatever desired comfort level needed. It is highly dust mite free with the added mattress cover. You should always have pillows inside a cotton (or vinyl) zippered pillow cover then the pillow enclosed in a pillow case. Pillow cases attracts more dust mites and other allergens to the bedroom. Mattress covers (not pads--different animal!) protects the mattress and cuts down on dust in the room.

The Select Comfort store at Dulles Town Center is the closest retailer in Loudoun. A web site that is useful for all REAL PEOPLE'S OPINIONS ON CONSUMER PRODUCTS is owned by shopping.com.
It is called: epinions.com and you can search for Select Comfort and other mattresses. Also, TEMPURPEDIC is another well-known brand-website is tempurpedic.com.

Sleep tight and do not let the dust mites bite!:pofl:

I got mine at Sams online. Fairly cheap and free delivery/setup.

The service at Baers was great when we were shopping/buying. However we were very unhappy with the mattress and they have a zero return policy and said that was a health code law. I've never tried to return/exchange a mattress anywhere else, but I'm pretty sure some of the stores allow returns for some period of time.

Thanks for all the information and recommendations with regards to purchasing a mattress. The more I search and shop the more I realize why there are so many mattress stores. People get confused after awhile and then just decide to but one because of the shear exhaustion of trying to do comparison shopping.

To make comparison shopping hard, mattress companies market the same mattress with different names to different retailers to provide some level of exclusivity for that retailer. I know a guy that runs a mattress store and, according to him, the manufacurer has a naming convention they use with all lines. The model name of comparable/similar/same mattresses will begin with the same letter.

Say, you go to Mattress Discounters and they have (hypothetical names) a Sealy Windsor and Serta Legacy you like, but 1-800-mattress has a Sealy Washington and Serta Luxury...each of those mattresses would be comparable or the same thing as the other joint. It's just like cell phone exclusivity, they're just rebranded/named for different carriers (T-Mobile MDA = Cingular 8125, etc).

This is just what the guy told me and I've never verified it, but it makes sense.

    Brim,

Thanks for the message I'll try it out and see if it works. Maybe there is a way to finally decipher the "Mattress Code".

Not to hijack the thread, but I noticed that your now in Knoxville; How do you like it?

I love it. I was born and grew up here. Moved to the DC Metro area after college for a job in 99 and finally got homesick enough to move last year. It's really hard for a new graduate to afford a house in NOVA while paying crazy rent but we were able to afford a nice home here and I'm close to my parents....plus I got to keep my job/salary, it was a win/win situation.

Do you know people here or something?

My brother-in-law (Commercial Banker) introduced me to the real estate market in and around Knoxville area several years ago and we have been involved with several commerical real estate transactions. It's a great area and we have met a bunch of good people over the years. We are starting to get involved in some deals in the Chattanooga area and also in the Sevierville area. I wish you the best in the your new job.

FWIW ... I second the comments on the Select Comfort bed. It does cost more, but it will be the last mattress you'll ever buy. I like a firm mattress, my wife a less firm, yet we can both have our way with this bed.

We have a king, and we wouldn't give it up for anything. I'm no longer waking up with backache because the mattress was too soft for me.

And if you're worried that you're just sleeping on an 'air mattress', don't. The mattress looks like any other mattress on a bed, the air bladders are inside of a cover that is made just like the outside of many regular mattresses. In fact, when we moved, the movers were worried about the 'select comfort' because they had not moved such a mattress. We just told them to put it in a mattress box. They were very surprised and relieved.

my only complaints with it are

    - the bed 'crowns' when inflated high
    - the bed's foam chamber walls are really noticable on the edge of the bed (feels like a waterbed) and in the center of the bed

It really has been better for my back.. but if I wanted a firm bed, I don't think I would like it giving how mine 'crowns' when inflated high

I, too, have to chime in on the Select Comfort. Sorry to be a party pooper, but I HATED it. Just hated it. They took it back, but we got stuck with the nearly $200 delivery fee. Everyone is different when it comes to what they like to sleep on. I just couldn't get used to the "dead" feeling of no movement or "reaction" to my movements that you get with an inner-spring mattress. I felt like such a loser because two of my friends SWEAR by their Select Comforts and I actually was making excuses for how terrible I felt when I called the 800 number to return it. Interestingly, the operator told me not to feel bad--about 30% of them get returned because people just don't like 'em. Service was good. But just be aware that if you get it and want to return it you are out the delivery fee.

FYI-- I bought a Sealy mattress this morning at our Broadlands Mattress Discounters and paid about the same as Costco including free delivery. Don't know if Costco has free delivery or not.
