Looking for restaurant reccommendations that are within a block from the Verizon Center downtown. We have concert tickets and would like to go out to dinner beforehand. Prefer a short walk from the restaurant to the center. Nothing outrageously expensive either :)

There's a place called "Matchbox" near there too that's really good...neat pizza/italian place.

I used to work in Chinatown and there are lots of great places. There's Capitol Q (Texas-style BBQ that is awesome). I concur that Matchbox is great. There's a Ruby's and a Legal Sea Foods directly across the steet. There's also a Hooter's across the street from Fado. Also on H Street is a great hole in the wall Chinese restaurant called Eat First. There's also a Chipotle and McDonald's right in the Verizon center. There's also Rosa Mexicana, Austin Grill, and Zola within a block or two of the arena.

Rosa Mexicano is a MUST! We drive to DC just for the guacamole dip. But you have to make reservations especially when there is something at the Verizon Center.

There's always Regional Food and Drink (RFD) next to Fado's. The food is ok and fairly inexpensive and a very very large selection of the brew ha ha. They are owned by the Brickskellar (in the book of records for having the most beer). Our friends also highly recommend Matchbox which is a slightly upscale pizza joint. I'm sure you can find them on www.washingtonpost.com. The burgers are fantastic at the Chop House and like Cliff said, the beer is fantastic, especially the bourbon stout. It's much like the oak barrel stout at ODB. There's also Gordon Biersch on F/9th which isn't too far of a walk either and their bier is pretty decent and the garlic fries are delicious. Those are our favorites around the area. Have fun!

of course---there's always the fine cuisine of THE Verizon Center....those cold and soggy chicken tender baskets....the 3 day old pretzels that may.....or may not have salt on them. And if you're thirsty---you can pay $6 for a less-than-luke-warm miller lite on tap.

We've actually been lucky enough to have eaten at the Acela Club that you can eat at and watch the hockey games (b/c who goes there for basketball?? :) )...and that food's pretty decent. but the place is always empty--so if you don't know someone on the inside--i don't know how you'd actually get in there. same with the 200 level seats....the most i've ever seen is about 18 people in those seats.

Washington has a hockey team? Since when?

I second the Fado recommendation. Love the bangers and mash!

Thanks for all of the reccommendations. I've been to the District Chophouse a long, long time ago but, I don't remember what the food was like.

FYI--Restaurant Week is happening January 8-14. Good time to go to a really good restaurant for only $20 pre-fixed lunch or $30 3-course dinner. We made reservations at Colvin Run Tavern in Tyson's. Hoping the food is as good as the reviews say it is. For $30, what the hey?? :)

Fado's boxtys are great too. I love the one filled with corned beef.

Last night I went to Zaytania, right across the street from Verizon. It's a Mediterranean Tapas place - absolutely incredible food. It's a bit pricey, but not overboard. I'm not a huge Greek food fan, but this place is fantastic.

Rosa Mexicano is also very good and very unique. Be sure to order a 'sipping' tequila if you go.

There is a great steak place at the Verizon Center. Sorry I can not remember the name. But maybe someone knows it. The steaks are great and all the sides are served family style, and the best part is after dinner you can walk down thier stairs past the bathrooms and out thier back door right in to the Verizon Center.
