    Safeway gas is now 10 cents off per gallon with $50.00 purchase and club card thru November 26th. May be good for people that shop there anyway.

    FWIW ... Giant-Eagle (no relation to Giant Foods) here in Pittsburgh has a gas card that builds up cents off per gallon by tracking your purchases. There's no having to buy $50 at one time.

    And its just not 10 cents, you can build up to 50 cents off per gallon !!

    It was really nice when the price of Premium (that Mini needs 97 octaine) was 3.25 !!

    I heard the same thing from one of the gas station managers there. They made it sound like it was a permanant thing but I'm not sure about that. Sounds like Dad4 heard it's only temporary.

    I think the most fair way to do gas discounts is with a percentage. That way when it's $4/gallon, we're not getting just 3 cents off ;)

    i purchase safeway gas all the time but you have you watch- once or twice the price was so inflated before the discount that it was CHEAPER to go to other gas stations at the regular price. But typically safeway is less expensive with the gas discount.

    there's always the citgo across from Costco as well- when the pumps are in working order, their gas is the cheapest I've seen apart from safeway.

    It always amazes me the amount of energy (no pun intended) gas prices generate. The fact that people will go out of their way to save a few cents per gallon (maybe 10 cpg) or a buck or two on a fill up, but drop more than that each day at the Starbucks (or any of the other luxuries we buy) shows how invested we can be in the emotion of finding that best gasoline deal.

    Jim,

    That's true. For my 15 gallon tank, $.10 means $1.50. But for my 40 gallon tank that means $4.00. Start extrapolating that out over a full year and it's real bucks.

    It seems like the gas stations beg you to shop with their posting of prices. Can you imagine if coffee prices started to be posted?

    Competition is a great equalizer and benefits all. I can't think of an industry that doesn't thrive when competition is around.

    Coffee=luxury.
    Gas=Necessity.
    BIG difference.

    afgm.. gas may be $4 a fill up, but when someone is dropping an extra $3/a cup.. 1-2x a DAY. I think extrapolated over time the coffee argument is way more exaggerated :)

    5c a gallon is only a dollar a fill-up and I only fill up about once every 2 weeks. 50c a week is something you lose out of your pocket.

    What tweeks me is seeing things like grocercies going up 20-30c an item.. extrapolated over 30+ items a trip. That's real money. We goto the grocery store more then we goto the gas station

    Steve,

    Shock...I actually see logic in your argument. :) In fact, for the mere pleasure of laying down $50 bucks in grocery costs, you get this fabulous and extravagant discount... not enough to make me re-direct my nozzle.

    I prefer the big discounts I get at Costco. Which ummm, I pay $35 annual to enjoy.

    Maybe I should cut back on coffee. It may be easier and more effective. I'll sleep on it and let you know what I think.

    I saw the thread regarding gas price wars. Recently I paid $1.94 a gallon in Gainesville, VA when I attended a 4H meeting in Prince William County. In case you have not heard, COSTCO in Sterling is going to have some competition.

    SAMS CLUB in Sterling (next to Walmart) will soon have a gas station on the corner near the rear exits. The public notice was placed on the corner about two to three months ago and the County finally approved it to be built in about three to four months. Also, Sterling Walmart will become a SUPERCENTER with a food center in about two to three years. All the Walmarts will eventually be converted to have a food center. If you are curious of how the new Walmart Supercenters look--visit the new 185,000+ square foot store at the Massaponnax exit below Fredericksburg. They built a SUPERTARGET larger than Leesburg which is the way the TARGET SUPERSTORE will be built across from Wegmans by July 2007 in Sterling. Cosners Corner at the Massaponnax exit will also have a Sonic's Hamburger QSR (quick serve restaurant) by Winter 2007. Check out their web site--it is great!

    Gas is a "necessity" because of the long term choices we have made: where we live vs. where we work, the vehicle we chose to buy, the activities we choose to do. We then watch the posted price like hawks ready to dive in to sate our need, all the while cursing the dealer who supplies our necessity.

    Ready for a laugh:D ?

    Today when I was in Prince William County in Manassas for a 4H Regional Meeting, I filled my suv at the new Bristow Safeway gas station. I had picked up some snacks for our meeting on the way to the Extension Office and picked up a friend to go to the 4H meeting with me.

    Funny thing was--instead of paying $2.89/per gallon--the pump read $2.25/per gallon. I asked the gas attendant which was the correct price. The sign showed the $2.89 price and the pump price was $2.25. He said that some thing (he did not know what?) was wrong with the pumps (all of them) and people was paying the $2.25 price. So, they were letting customers fill up for the $2.25 price. He said that the people who service (fix the pumps) would correct the problem later at night.

    Guess I got lucky--not many breaks like that!

    Oh well--

    Foodie
