Just wondering, but what is the local law for scooters? It seems to me that some of the motorized scooters should fall into the area requiring a license to operate. I'm worried that the near misses I have had lately are going to increase, and I will have yet another thing to watch out for.

Basically, I was passed on the right side while in the right lane making a right turn. It seemed the operator felt they had the right of way, and it was my responibility to stop and check to see if someone was coming down the road on my right side. Unfortunately, they were not on the sidewalk, because that I would have expected them to have the right of way (pedestrians always win accident cases).

If it isn't legal to operate them on the streets, how can we enforce this, since the police are obviously overloaded.

I'm not sure of the legality of scooters on the streets, but they are not allowed on the walking paths in Broadlands.

However, I would assume they need to follow the same rules of the road as bicycles. That is, to stop at lights, watch for cars, and obey other traffic rules.

However, if you were in the right turn lane, with a TURN SIGNAL blinking, and they still decided to pull in front of you, well, they're certainly a candidate for the Darwin Award.

sounds like a GREAT article for the HOA newsletter to publish on spring/summer safety tips- we parents need to overload our kids with safety reminders so the odds are better that they'll pay closer attention.

unfortunately there will still be accidents but the more places that scooter users are bombarded with safety the better.

if my son had a scooter- which he doesn't- I would do a driving test with him to ensure that he knows AND follows the rules of the road on it, and if he doesn't, i'd TAKE IT FROM HIM FOR HIS OWN SAFETY. give him a test in another 3 days or so to see if he studied the rules and passes my test.

hmmm- scooter safety courses... I smell an opportunity....

We have a house near Ridgeway - like clock work there are two kids that ride on the street around 4PM. What concerned me is that they were not wearing helmets and sometimes "double" ride. I ended up following them to get a general idea of where they live on/off Ridgeway. I then conveyed this info to Sgt. Kerrigan as well as Sgt. Goddard via email...from what I was told they had a talk with the parents and I haven't seen the kids in a few weeks. Hope this helps.
