    JLC and others--

Here is a new thread in response to query for frozen lobster tails (langostino) and other seafood mail order inquiries: (I will add periodically to thread.)

iseafood.com (I Seafood is a company from New York that I talk to for wholesale companies. They will ship ANY type of fresh or flash frozen seafood and fish--including langostino.) Their phone is:
    (212) 557-4466. I just talked to Pescatore owner of one of largest wholesale fish companies in NYC.

gortonfreshseafood.com (Gorton Fresh Seafood delivers directly to homes and offices fresh seafood and lobster tails, etc.)

www.mainelobsterdirect.com (Maine Lobster well-renowned site for order fresh lobsters and lobster tails, etc.) We have ordered from them and love it!

great-alaska-seafood.com (Great Alaska Seafoods ships all over nation FRESH, FROZEN, and SMOKED seafood and fish products.) Great resource for wild caught salmon and other fish.

reluctantgourmet.com (Reluctant Gourmet is a search forum for ALL FOOD products GOURMET and other related products.) This search engine has a great recipe newsletter, online answers for cooking questions, and resources with links to hundreds of gourmet products (i.e. ALL FOODS, cookware, etc.)

cbcrabcakes.com (Chesapeake Bay Gourmet has BEST ONLINE and MAIL ORDER crabcakes, seafood, and other Chesapeake Bay items.) QVC features their crabcakes and other crab items ALL the time on their shows. They have Maryland beaten biscuits, the best Crab soups (alot of lump crabmeat), and other products.

ducktrap.com (Ducktrap River Farm is BEST smoked seafood and fish items on the web.) We order from them directly for smoked salmon for homemade sushi rolls. Wegmans orders from them for their stores. You can order directly from their web site. Ducktrap carries ALL VARIETIES of smoked seafoods and fish. For example, smoked oysters, mussels, salmon, etc. Other gourmet items carried also.

SPECIAL NOTES: WHEN PURCHASING FRESH OR FLASH FROZEN SEAFOOD--IT WILL USUALLY BE SHIPPED QUICKLY IN STYROFOAM CONTAINERS OR FROZEN COOLERS ON DRY ICE OR FROZEN ICE BAGS. THIS IS ACCEPTABLE JUST BE SURE YOU FREEZE IMMEDIATELY UPON ARRIVAL OR USE PRODUCTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. FOR FROZEN SEAFOOD AND FISH--SHELF LIFE IN FREEZER IS USUALLY 2-4 MONTHS.

WHEN PURCHASING FRESH SEAFOOD FROM YOUR LOCAL FISHMONGER (SEAFOOD COUNTER), YOU ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE FRESH FISH THAT IS IN CASE HAS CLEAR EYES NOT GLASSY EYES IF PURCHASING WHOLE FISH. PREVIOUSLY FROZEN FISH (FILETS INCLUDED) IS ALL RIGHT--BUT YOU DO NOT EVER WANT TO PURCHASE SEAFOOD OR SUSHI GRADE FISH IF YOU CAN SMELL--YES--SMELL THE FISH. YOU SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO SMELL FISH--THIS IS A SIGN THAT THE FISH OR SEAFOOD IS GETTING "OLD"!

SOME LOCAL STORES IF THEY PURCHASE FROZEN FISH (NOT WHOLE FOODS OR WEGMANS) WILL SPRAY FISH IN A DILUTED SOLUTION OF BLEACH WATER TO MAINTAIN "FRESHNESS". JUST BE SURE FISH DOES NOT SMELL LIKE CHLORINE BLEACH.

WEB SITES FOR FISH AND SEAFOOD PURCHASING, STORAGE, AND SAFETY ARE AS FOLLOWS:

oceansalive.org (Oceans Alive contains a web site with a downloadlable pocket size card for seafood and fish buying. It is a great resource for concerned consumers in fish and seafood issues.)

blueocean.org (Blue Ocean is a seafood guide online with many ocean friendly fish listed as well as seafood. Great resources.)

simplyseafood.com (Simply Seafood is a company with enormous information on seafood safety, education, and proper storage information.)

I hope this answers some of your concerns regarding seafood and fish queries. Anymore questions--feel free to post on forums.

    Thanks for input.

Thanks. I was looking specifically for langostino and none of those sites carry it.

Does anyone else know where I might find langostino “lobster”? Either locally or by mail.

Try the Annapolis Seafood Market. Don't know if they have it or not, but they might be able to get it. Worth a try since they have tons of seafood and can ship it anywhere!

Thanks again. I ordered from iseafood last year and after a little glitch they came through for me. They don’t have langostino on their site this year and haven’t responded to my email. I’ll try calling them.

JLC - Are you referring to the Langostinos that you could buy frozen in the plastic packs? If so I am not sure if you can even get them anymore. They were heavily over fished in the 80's and 90's. The Chilean government has since cut way back on allowable harvests. I haven't seen them in stores in a long time. They were quite tasty

    Those are them.

My mother makes a langostino au gratin recipe every Christmas and has had trouble finding the frozen langostino in stores the past few years. She will not use any other type of lobster/shellfish. We’ve tried. :rolleyes2:

I managed to get them from iseafood last year but they are tough to come by! I think they’re mostly used in restaurants and not sold to individuals.

    JLC--

Just call number I gave directly and you can order at least 5 pounds of langostino. Tell whoever calls that someone called inquiring for a friend (that being me for you--I did not give my name), and they told me that THEY CAN order product. They have to call THEIR SUPPLIERS to get CURRENT MARKET prices on seafood or fish items if they do not have on hand. Product IS available even if not listed on web site.

    Good eats--

Anymore problems getting through to iseafood.com and I will call back and personally order for you if need be. Just PM or ask on forums.

This is not just a wholesale purveyor--they also sell to public! Keep trying!! They can overnite products.

    Foodie,

Sorry to hijack this seafood subject, but I'll pull it into the context of spoilage, therefore, I am not far off.

What is your opinion of "bagged" lettuce? Any spoilage concerns? What is the shelf life?

    :D afgm--

That's okay!! Hijacking is allowed!! Oh, thanks again for "y'alls" help!

Anyway to answer your question concerning bagged produce. Specifically lettuces--I thinks it is safe to eat. Just wash bagged produce before you use it as a precaution. I realize it says "triple washed" on products but I still wash mine.

When the "spinach scare" was going on, we had more than enough salad and spinach mixes from our cold frames to supply several dozen families. We gave it away because we could not eat it fast enough. My quads love greens and salads but it just was alot to eat!

That is why sustainable food movements are important. When you know your food sources you are not afraid to eat healthy! Local farmers take precautions with produce. Why pay for salad mixes that travels 1000(s) of miles to get to local stores? Check out following web site for sustainable living and food sources: (I will post under Organic thread that I create information on Organic Living, Foods, and Sustainable Foods.)

http://www.slowfoodusa.org (Slow Food is a great read!)

Here is a web site with an online organic source for food: (You can also subscribe for the guide. Partial articles archived online. Search for e coli and salad mix articles for helpful information.)

http://www.thegreenguide.com (The Green Guide is a superb resource for ALL kinds of food concerns!)

Shelf life for ANY GREENS should only be 3 to 5 days at most. Another great site for Food Safety is published online and sponsored by Food Marketing Institute:

Re: Seafood Sites (Fresh and Frozen Web Sites)

    Fellow Foodies--

Here is a great place to order smoked seafood and smoked fish, gourmet desserts, gourmet cheeses, and other great foods. Alot of "high-end" grocers use this company for their stores (i.e. Balducci, Whole Foods, etc.).

Also, check out previous posts under this thread. I will add more later if needed.

Re: Seafood Sites (Fresh And Frozen Web Sites)

    Fellow Foodies--

With all the concern in the public about Sustainable Seafood and Fish products, I thought I would give you a web site and link of interesting info for you to read on a "cold Winter's night". Sustainable seafood and fish is simply using seafood wisely in food preparation that has been raised as "Wild or Wild Caught" and not as much "Farm Raised".

I can also provide more info if asked on Sustainable Seafoods, etc.
There are varieties of seafood and fish that has been "overfished and caught".

Below are web sites with Wholesalers, Retailers, Restaurants, and Seafood Purveyors with great info for you seafood lovers. Other seafood info is listed with links also--

www.seafoodchoices.com (Seafood Choices Alliances offers sustainable seafood links/info.)
