Obviously today (Thursday 17th) we had some heavy snow in a small amount of time (3-4 hours). I just got a call from my wife who said as of 3:40pm Village Drive and our side street had not been plowed and she got stuck.

I called HOA, and was told the Snow plow was out. I appreciate the hard work our plow driver does. My concern comes from the fact that we have ONE plow?! I confess I don't know the size of Broadlands and the Southern Walk, but I remember in Ashburn Village there were 2-3 snow plows (you can see them parked at the HOA office there).

Of course the first words out of the HOA was 'well we could get more but that would raise your rates'.

Anyone here know what the rules are in regards to snow plow per sq./mile of roads in a development or why we would only have one plow and driver?

In any manner: THANK YOU MR. PLOW DRIVER FOR YOUR HARD WORK, WE APPRECIATE IT!

Off to brave the drive home.

    good luck!

    -C

We have a crew with at 6 or 7 trucks that handles the roads which the HOA plows. There is not only one truck. Unfortunately, the person at the front desk was misinformed. She has been given the correct information. There is also equipment and manpower for clearing pathways and walkways. As anyone who has lived through a few winters in Broadlands will tell you the HOA streets are consistantly cleared earlier and far better than the VDOTstreets. This was alot of snow in a short period of time. Please be patient.

It will truly be interesting to watch what happens when we get a REAL snowstorm. I remember a 3 footer in (I think) 1995. We were snowed in (no plow) for three days. I dread what will happen around here now that the new development has happened. I also remember a 24 inch (in Ellicott City, MD) storm in Novemebr 1986 that turned my then 20 minute commute into a 3 hour nightmare. I was amazed at the incompetence of the drivers in driving in snow and how it freaked everybody out. If that is a sign of things to come, I'll avoid the road at all costs during the next big storm.

Still I can't wait for some real snow!!

Hey 1/2 troll, well like me coming from Chicagoland, it was areal surprse to see when schools would close with an inch of the snow on the ground. I too used to gripe at the drivers supposed incompetence; however, in this area with lots of ice along with the snow, and the crazy driving, personally I'd rather have people paying attention to slowing down! Just becasue you have AWD or 4WD doesn't mean you can still go the speed limit or above...that is an accident waiting to happen. AWD or 4WD is for off road conditions, where you drive slower...!

Moved from Sterling Park to New Hampshire when I was in 2nd grade. We got 10 inches of snow in mid-November and us kids figured we would be out of school for a week (it was what we were used to). Imagine our grief when we saw the school buses driving by! :bigeek:

Buffalo, NY.....I could count on ONE hand in twelve years of school when we had a snow day....We knew it was REALLY bad when the schools were closed. They also closed by school district, not county. I grew up in the snow belt too. AND you better get to work on time too...no excuses...of course the snow plowing is much better up there as well!!! 1996 was the year we had back to back storms here in NOVA. I could not believe it. My son was in 8th grade and had ELEVEN days off from school. No excuse for that at all!!!! I was like a caged lion.......roads weren't plowed or if they were, it was only one lane. Ridiculous!

I'll take snow anytime over ice! Growing up on the VA/NC border, we rarely got snow but regularly got ice. Ice storms would come through and we'd be out of school for a week or so.

Ice storms are NOT good...I'd rather drive in a raging blizzard (which I have) than drive with ice ANYTIME!!!

I think if you're in an area that has lots of snow fall, yes, you'd be better prepared for it and spend more money on being well equipped to handle it. But when you're in an area that has significant snow fall relatively rarely, why waste the tax dollars on huge fleets of snow plows that will, for the most part, sit unused?

What I am saying is that when the residential densities in Loudoun were still low people panicked for what I (from PA) considered a typical winter storm. If what has happened the past few years is any indication, a big storm (for here - like over 12 inches) will be truly frightening. We are due and I am dreading it and looking forward to it at the same time - its like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

I agree on the ice/snow thing. Snow fun! Ice BAD!!
