Anyone found decent sushi out here in the burbs? We've tried the sushi in the Safeway shopping center, in the Giant shopping center off Ashburn Farm, and in the Shopper's Food center by wing factory. All are bordering on inedible. The last one even made me sick (they had one guy answering phones, making sushi, waiting & busing tables one night - health inspector bait).

I haven't found any quality sushi closer than Koto in Tysons. Obi Sushi in Reston is serviceable. Our favorites are Momo in Old Town (it's a fairly new hole in the wall off Queen St.) and Sushi Taro in the city.

Any recommendations from the peanut gallery?

I've been looking for one too, but I dont want to risk getting sick...

If you are willing to drive to Reston/Herndon
I like Matsuri Sushi, it is actually one of my favorite places for sushi buffet, their regular Dinner is okay, but I love their lunch and dinner buffet, Dinner buffet is more expensive - they serve Sashimi.

    The best place by far (literally) is still the place in Germantown, Maryland;
thats right you heard me; Germantown, Maryland. The restaurant is called Yuraku, and yes I will make the drive from Ashburn.....it is worth the drive
http://www.yuraku.com/ They have the BEST Spicy Tuna Rolls that I have ever had in the area, the peices are HUGE.

Trust me I have taken friends there from NoVA area, and now they are mad at me cause they don't want to make the drive up there HAHAHA LOL.
All my friends that I take there from NoVA told me that every time they go out for sushi they are disappointed (in comparison to Yuraku's) :pofl:
on a weekend it takes me 30-40 mins to get there, so definately worth it

another place i like is Konami Sushi in Vienna, VA, but it's kind of expensive...
I like their lunch specials with all the rolls you can order as a combo.

couldn't agree more! though bonefish's seared tuna appetizer does well when i'm in desperation and don't feel like driving :)

have you tried yoko in herndon in the kmart shopping center? they have good "suburb" sushi. mikako (i think that's the name of it...) in herndon on centreville rd. is also good, and has been highly rated. there's tachibana in mclean, and then kaz in dc.

Ditto on the Seared Tuna from Bonefish... you can get that as a main course to you just have to ask for you tuna steak to be made that way, just ask for Vincent to be your server next time, he'll take good care of you
mmmm man now my mouth is watering... seared tuna with seasame and Bang bang Shrimp...

    Re: Sushi-Yummo Review

    Schwarz Family and others--

We took my friends from Georgia who are here visiting us to our favorite sushi restaurant. It is located at Parc City Center in Sterling, VA and is called AOBA Restaurant. They do not have a web site but below is a review and location from Backfence.com.

    www.Backfence.com/yellow/ShowPost.cfm?mycomm=ST&bid=802
(Backfence.com provides reviews and other information on local eateries and other venues of place all over the country.)

If you go into a sushi or fish/seafood restaurant (or buy it to prepare at home), you NEVER want to SMELL a "FISHY" scent. Aoba is great--we have been going there for years. Our guests enjoyed it. When I was pregnant (my 2nd pregnancy--all I craved was sushi! And--yes--I ate it!)

Also, Chengs Restaurant is a good Chinese restaurant. The owners of Chengs also owns Pacific Rim (Pan Asian food) at Potomac Run Shopping Center. Chengs is located also at Parc City Center in Sterling. There is also a great Korean, Vietnamese, and other oriental restaurants at Parc City Center. Great strip mall for oriental foods!

The new sushi place near the Harris Teeter in the Ashburn Shopping Center is good, but somewhat expensive. We go to Tokyo Sushi in the Ashburn Village Giant shopping center mostly. Pretty consistent, decent quality.

A correction to my original post. I had mentioned that 'Koto' was good in Tysons. Koto is actually a very bad sushi joint on King st. in Old Town. It's under new management now, so it may be better, but we lived there for 4 years and wouldn't go near the place.

I had meant to say Konami, as mentioned by GeorgeSC. It's a bit pricey, but very good.

I've had really good luck at Nagoya at the Ashburn Farm shopping center.

They have a really good Spicy Shrimp Tempura roll and their Salmon and Tuna is always fresh.

Akira (same shopping center as Home Goods). The only place we'll go around here. Excellent service and great food!

A second for both Akira and Aoba. We tried Raku in Dupont Circle once and really enjoyed it -- we were pleasantly surprised that the prices (not counting the D.C. tax!) weren't any different than around here.

Also, for serious cravings and sheer sushi volume, there's Matuba in Bethesda. They have a sushi "conveyer belt" in the back for a FLAT fee, not per-plate! One visit there satisfies my sushi needs for at least a month :)

If your in Bethesda, you should try Hinode, on Hampden lane. It's the place to go when you want to put on the sushi feed bag. Lunch time Sushi Buffet is about 10 bucks and the eats are pretty good. Just went there today. It's within walking distance of my office. There is a gang of us in the office that go quite often.

Try Tachibana's in McLean on Lowell Ave. They have the best Spicy Scallop Roll. This restaurant's a hidden gem when it comes to Sushi. Pricey but worth it.
