This may be a little bit early, but is there a schedule out for swim classes offered at any of the Broadlands pools? I would like to register my 3.5yr old daughter in swim classes but also want to register her for a couple of short summer camps and need to coordinate the schedules. Does anyone know what the name of the swim facility behind the Verizon building (in the office park where the 2nd Fire Station is located off Waxpool Rd). I know they offer swim classes also.

Good luck at Potomac swim school - they are full until June 18th! Only available class is baby tots and of course some expensive accelerated swim team class.

Hence, why we should all try to support the CIP to be amended to include a 50 meter pool instead of a 37.5 meter pool at the Broadlands Rec. Center. I think this could really increase the uses the pool could provide residents in this part of the county, especially in swim classes. See thread:

Regarding the Broadlands swim classes, do you know how many weeks the swim classes usually are for preschoolers? And are they typically once a week classes?

I have looked at the swim class schedules over the last couple summers. My question is why there are no classes in the evenings or weekends? Just because both parents work, does that mean we have to pay for individual lessons?

There aren't any weekend/evening classes?? Well, I guess that won't work for us since both of us work as well. I find this dilemma to be very common in this area as I search for activities and classes for my kids. I feel like we are being faulted for choosing to not be a stay at home parent.

I'm confused. Does Broadlands offer group swim classes at our pools or do we have to go elsewhere like Potomac Swim School?

    Thanks!

NV Pools, the company which manages the pools at Broadlands, offers lessons at the Broadlands pools. They will post information at the pools on opening weekend.

Hi, I am just a resident but to answer the question as to why classes are only held in the mornings, group lessons (at least at Summerbrooke) are held before the pool officially opens (@10am). They have to do it that way because the group classes fill up the entire pool and because the llifeguards are also the instructors. It would be impossible to fit large group lessons while the pool is open to residents.... plus lifeguards are working at that point. Some sessions depending on demand started very early (~7:30am) last summer - perhaps someone who goes in to work later can take their child to an early class.....

T8erman and I both work outside the home as well and the Broadlands swim lesson schedule never worked for us and I never drummed up enough energy to say anything about it. They could certainly have one or two small (less than 3-4 student) classes a weeknight at the big pool. After 6pm there is
plenty of space in the pool--but then again, people would probably complain about it, so I understand!

We've been using Potomac Swim School for over a year and half and have been pleased. It's not cheap, but not insane either. The only thing I'd change if I could is the class duration. It is only 30 minutes and I think 40 would be better. Seems like they just get in groove with the lesson and then its over.

I'd also check at the new Claude Moore Rec Center for lesson schedules.

There are usually 4 sessions that are two weeks long, except for the last session that is usually only 1 week. The lessons are M-Th with Friday open for make-ups due to weather and such. The lessons are 30 minutes long. My daughter's lessons last summer were generally between 9 and 9:30, but I think the earliest lessons are at 8. Summerbrook Pool offers levels 1-4 generally. They do have the more advanced classes at the Southern Walk Pool, like level four and above. When the pool opens they will have a schedule of times to have your child tested to see what level they will be placed in. Lessons generally start after school gets out, so I'm guessing they will start the week of the 25th (June)

    See ya at the pool.

I had the same problem - kids' swim classes did not fit with my work schedule. One of my neighbors had a lifeguard give their child private instruction and so I gave that a try two summers. It was not expensive, certainly way less than PSS, and the instructors were really nice and did a great job. My kids also liked seeing their swim teacher when she was on lifeguard duty. We just asked the guard at the desk if anyone was interested in teaching private lessons.

We also used PSS several sessions and thought it was expensive but very worthwhile.

Thanks Audrey. I will check with life guard for me.

Have you checked herndon community center? They have classes in the week ends for kids. I recently enrolled my child and it costed 34$ for 8 - 30 min classes.

Can anyone tell me what the dates are on the swim sessions at summerbrooke? I know one just started today through next week, when are the next three? And, do the ones later in the summer generally fill up quicker (due to vacations being over etc.)

    Thanks!
