Very exciting topic I know but we can no longer stand our cheap plastic Kennmore. Do you have a vacuum cleaner that just makes the chore a breeze? Please recommend it? Do you have a piece o' #%&@ that you wouldn't recommend? Please tell me about it. C'mon, much more exciting topic than iPhones, right??

Oh yeah, need something that will win the battle with pet hair (black lab)..

    Exciting - Ha ha
We have a Dyson, the model is "Animal." It picks up dog hair better than our central Vac. Exciting no, easy to use yes. ...and I have a Chocolate Lab.

I highly recommend the Dyson animal. We have had ours forever and have had no problems. It does a great job!! (We have a lab mix.)

I think any Dyson model would be an excellent choice.

I may be wrong but I think they all use the same powertrain and suction is also the same. It is the attachments and the "ball" that make them unique. The "ball" models typically run about $100 bucks more than the comparable model without.

    Love my Dyson!

As you can see, Dyson has a strong following. I have a 10 year old Hoover WindTunnel that works very well. It has the allergy filters and works great on cat hair. A friend of mine was looking for a vacuum a while back and I researched reviews online (Consumer Reports and Amazon) and the Dysons and the WindTunnel were rated the best. It was interesting that I see people say they love their Dyson but the reviews on Amazon were kind of mixed - it may vary for particular models.

If you decide on the Dyson, check prices online in case you can find a good deal on a remanufactured one like this one from Overstock.com. If you get a good deal on shipping, it could work out well.

We have the Dyson Ball and love it. We have a golden retriever and it picks up the hair fine, I'm not sure of the difference between the ball and animal. Maybe the canister is bigger? We do have to empty it between every room. Oh and the thing i dislike about it....the cord is not very long, so we can't go room to room with it plugged in. (we also have a hoover (big and bulky) that we keep upstairs, and it has a nice long cord, can practically vacuum the entire floor with only one plug change. )

The Dyson is so lightweight though, and I love the wand. Very easy to use.

we have a dyson ball in another house.. and a regular dyson at home. I prefer the non-ball model... the ball model just feels really flimsy and almost takes more effort to control. I prefer the regular upright.

The difference between most of the models is the included accessories.

Just to clarify Dyson has 2 "Animal" models (DC25/DC28), as such we love our Dyson DC28 - NOT a fan of the Animal "ball" model.

    More info here: http://www.dyson.com/pets/dysonanimal.asp?petPageID=animal

We recently purchased an additional Dyson the "ball" Model DC25 because I didn't want to lug my full size Dyson up/down 3 levels.

I've used the DC25/Ball for about 90 days and I am not pleased with it for the following reasons; short cord, less accessories and feels "cheap" poorly made when compared to the performance our 6+year old DC28. Hope that makes sense.

wow, thanks for the responses. Seems like Dyson is a clear choice.

I went to the Dyson site and compared models but its really hard to tell the difference between DC## Animal and Non-Animal, etc.

The other main criteria is stairs... our pooch loves sleeping there so we need something that makes cleaning carpeted stairs easier, or at least not more of a chore than it should be. Do the Dyson wands/attachment hose reach an entire stair case??

    thanks again!

The DC28 Animal has a reach of 52 feet. I'm sure that's a straight shot to the tip of the hose, so remove a few feet from the total reach to get a feel for 'usable' reach on a staircase.

Okay, I got that number from the Dyson website and now that I think about it, that's a lot of feet! I bet they're including the length of the power cord in that number, which is about 35 feet.

So the hose itself should have about 17 feet of reach.

    Sorry about that! :)

It depends on Dyson model and your stairs. The DC28 does have the longest reach (hose & cord) of all their models and it comes with the following accessories:

Stair tool, Combination accessory tool, Mini turbine head (it's motorized), Flat Outâ„¢ head

IMHO: The mini-turbine is the best for carpeted stairs & the flat-out head is great for under furniture/hard surface floors. I usually put ours (the DC28) on the middle landing and I have no problems cleaning the entire stair case.

We have a Miele, and frankly, it makes the Dyson seem like a Dustbuster. It is feather light, powerful, lots of attacments that store easily, and reaches into many awkward places.

We had a Dyson, but got sick of cleaning it out and lugging it around. The Dyson isn't a bad vaccuum, but its marketing far outweighs its talent.

Yea, but paying about $4.50 per bag can get pretty costly over time. I think emptying the canister in a Dyson is pretty simple and moving it around isn't really an issue for our family.

So for me, the extra cost for something like a Miele unit, and having to buy expensive bags makes a Dyson a much better 'investment' for our family. It all comes down to each family's needs and expectations I guess.

I have two Eureka 4870s ($70-100 CR Best Buy! [I know CR isn't the best])... no yuppy status symbol for me here ;) My MIL bought a $1800 (!@$!@) Kirby (the company is part of Warren buffet's empire, weird) from a door-to-door sales man ... meh. Not worth the money.

The Germans are good engineers, I've read good things about Miele and Sebo 8)

Miele is a wonderful vacuum albeit rather pricey. The hepa filter and sealed bags don't allow any dust to escape and it works wonders on your mattress if you have allergies to dust mites.
