If you are looking for some truly outstanding Thai food then you're in luck in Broadlands because Orchid Thai has been bought out and is now called Thai Basil.

This is the same Thai Basil that's in Chantilly, on Rt. 50, that is so highly acclaimed.

The food at Thai Basil is truly outstanding.

The flavors that they meld together are just great.

    great news or...

Orchid Thai, while not stellar, was decent. Is this a sign of the Thai restaurant market now that there is one in every strip mall?

This is not just a sign for Thai restaurants. You may not notice how many new owners have taken over some places since the names have stayed the same, but there plenty of places for sale.

It is an unfortunate position we find ourselves in, the supply has far exceeded the demand.

I just wish there was more variety around this area.

    More variety?
Even the restaurants that get rave reviews around here aren't busy consistiently. Be prepared for a variety of empty spaces.

I agree that there needs to be more variety, but also better quality of food. If the food was better, we'd eat in the Ashburn area more. Instead, we still find ourselves eating in Sterling, Reston, Herndon, and Chantilly (and Arlington if we got time!).

You must have very eclectic or rich tastes if you can't find anything satisfactory around here.
I know I'm not a connosseur (gads, how do you spell that!) but I think there are a lot of good restaurants here.

    Cliff,

I agree. I moved here from Lorton about 6 months ago and the food around here is 10 times better than it was in that area. I'm happy with the variety of options I have. I guess it would be nice if some of my favorite restaraunts such as Sweetwater and Rio Grande were closer, but then again I might end up getting sick of them.

In my case - I LOVE to cook!!! So when we do go out to eat, I expect as good, if not better than I can make at home, it's also healthier.

Same here, which I guess is why my husband and I think the food offerings could be better with more focus on healthier. BTW--we don't dislike everything--we do frequent Sal's when we're willing to splurge and have pizza, Anothai for thai, and hit Cafe Panache for brunch from time to time...

I agree - healthier is better - I read recnetly where calories in restaurants are usually 60% higher than what you eat at home!!! That's a lot.....

I totally believe that! At least at home we tend to make better portion sizes than what restaurants serve up. Plus, we tend to lay off a lot of the butter, grease, heavy cream, etc. when cooking. I just wish there was somewhere to go out to eat that 1) wasn't a chain, 2) had healthy options, and 3) tasted really good, not just average. When we lived in Arlington there were more options like that than here in Ashburn. I guess they'll come eventually.

I tend to agree, too. I've reached the point in life where I'm a fairly good cook and what I cook at home is usually better, healthier and cheaper than what I could find in a restaurant. (The exception is ethnic cooking.) As far as new restaurants, though, I do think Callaloo is great. They're not a chain, the food is healthy and good. For the most part, the recipes come from the owner (Lorna) and they are like what she would eat at home (Jamaica).

Am eating leftover Thai Basil as I type this; I give it a thumbs up. I spoke to one of the workers when I picked it up, he said business was going slow but that's what they want until they get fully up and running. He said they will begin a advertising push when they are ready (I warned him against road spam!).

Anyways, since our last order of takeout from Anothai was really blahhh (really, ended up tossing most of it), Thai Basil will take the lead for this Thai junkie for now.

Ended up at Thai Basil with three friends from out of town today. It was empty at 2:30, but I have to admit it was excellent. I asked the three friends for their honest opinions, and the consensus was thumbs up. Fresh food plus good and spicy!
