Is there really such a thing? How far away does this thing pick up? We went to the pool at a little after noon and the skies were cloudy. We were told by the pool staff that they closed because of their "thunder detector". :rolleyes3:

I can totally understand closing the pool during a thunderstorm, but how close does it have to be to be an issue?

If you can hear thunder, then lightning is already a possibility. I would think 20-25 miles is a minimum distance to detect activity as lightning can strike typically within 15 miles of a storm.

Thunder and lightning detectors can vary in distances they can pick up storms. They are very beneficial to pools and outdoor events such as baseball, golf, soccer...

Not thunder detector - lightning detector :) yes, they exist and yes we have one now.

Its just like how on TV you see they show where lightning strikes are? Now we can accurately say when lightning is within a set range.

Ours is set for a visual warning at 16 miles out and a audible warning at 10 miles. When the storm is that close the lifeguards should have already heard thunder on there own and this is just a back up.
They are required on all golf courses and are normally set at a 75 mile range.

If you have any specific question on how this one was set up please feel free to give me a call
