I live in a 2 year old Van Metre house and have a very simple gas fireplace in my living room... has anybody upgraded to a full stone wall like some of the van metre estate homes have? I wonder what something like that would cost??? Any thoughts from anybody

I have a friend over in Lansdowne who did that. I think she said it cost about $1000, but I think that was a good deal. It was several years ago when they had construction all around them. I think she walked over to a house that was being worked on and contracted with the workers for a weekend job. Good luck.

We have stone on our gas fireplace that VM did going all the way up to the ceiling. It is nice and not overdone. Most peeps thinks it needs flanking built in bookcases. I even thought of topping that with 4 foot wide transom windows, but quickly realized that I would stare at blue siding rather than the sky. But what did make a big diff was pulling off all the first floor baseboards and replacing with 5" inch ones and installing 4"inch crown in the family room and kitchen, which made everything pop - including the fireplace. I'd be reluctant to do the whole wall as that is a very personal choice and might be hard resale value-wise. But hey, if you plan to live here for 25-30 years, why not?

The stone we have was made in Tennessee and took two months to get for our front walk redo a few years ago. But I wanted it to match what was already out there. The mason we used we got through Greenworks Landscaping, which is off RT.50. The designer we had used him before on other projects. Try giving them a call and they may have his number. 703-327-2233
