Neighbor and I found 2 active wasp nests under his deck yesterday. Went over to my deck, one active one under it also. All the wasps had either young or larvae.

So check those decks and other spots they may nest, they are out there!

I was told yesterday, wasps are natural predators of Cicadas. Wasp populations increase when Cicadas are around.

FWIW .. the best way to handle a small wasp nest (not one of the really big, enclosed paper wasp nests) is to use the wasp specific insect bombs sold at the home stores. They contain a mixture of insecticide and liquid propellant that:

    1. Actually freezes and kills the wasps currently on the nest.
    2. Leaves a residual insecticidal barrier that kills any larvae in the nest, and any returning adults.

When I was in the AF and working Pest Management, the product was only manufactured by one company, and it was then called Wasp Freeze, now I believe the patent has expired and it is being manufactured and sold under a few different brands.
