I was reading another thread about Ding and Gone, but there is a much more serious issue out there that the neighborhood teens are doing. This is not a rumor, I actually heard it from teenagers - and yes parents were also informed. These kids are using keypads to get into peoples garages and if you happen to have a refrigerator (with beer, etc). they clean it out. They get the combinations from each other (when they are friends, or friends of friends) and then raid the garages for alcohol and valuables when you are at work or worse, on vacation. I caution everyone who has keyless entry into their garages to change the combinations often. If you have teenagers (and believe me I have two), talk to them about the importance of NOT sharing your combination, because a friend today is taking your belongings tomorrow. Also, I change my pin number anytime I'm going to be away for a few days to prevent the breaking and entering. Also - I never keep alcohol in my fridge in the garage.

Just thought I would throw this new disturbing activity out there so everyone can be aware.

    Ruth

P.S. the couch someone else was talking about apparently ended up in the woods behind Eagle Ridge (it is now gone).

Most new garage door openers use a 'rolling code' feature which makes this kind of 'intrusion' quite difficult unless the kids in question have a LOT of time on their hands in order to cycle through thousands and thousands of code combinations. Even then, they would still need to have a good deal of luck on their side. It's not enough to simply have the digit code; there's another rolling number in the unit that both units exchange with each other. I'm not saying it's foolproof, but if a kid has to stand in a street with a keypad for an extended period of time, chances are they will find something more 'lucrative' and less obvious to do.

Now, if what your are saying is that the kids somehow actually got the door code from someone else who was given the code, etc, and didn't actually 'crack the code', then this is an entirely different issue. The garage door code is like a key to your house; you don't give the code to anyone whom you wouldn't trust with an actual key.

Also, if you go on vacation and feel uneasy, many garage door openers have a 'lock' mode which can makes the door open only using the 'wired' pad inside the garage. Even more extreme, simply unplug the unit and lock the door manually. This last solution is what we, as well as many of our neighbors do when leaving for extended periods of time.

Another solution is to not have a keypad, and give the children a key to the house, instead of having them use the garage to go in and out.

About a week ago I looked in our fridge in the garage, and found there to be 12-20 less beers than I expected. At first I assumed that my wife had some friends over, but she said no. Then I figured I just had a memory lapse, and didn't stock it as I thought I remembered. Now I read this post and I have to wonder ...

About a month ago my neighbor across the street had a couple of cases of beer disappear from their garage fridge. It was in the evening – they were out on the back deck but had left their garage door up.

You can't be too trusting ... while overall, Broadlands is a safe place to live, you have got a few teens who think nothing about 'borrowing' stuff, or have no regard for others property, whether land or beer !!

I would never leave the garage door open if I were not out front working in the yard.

You can always put a lock on it. That's what I did when I had the cleaning crew stealing stuff out of my fridge at work. A hasp latch, drill, some pop rivets, and a lock and you're set...unless the kids are real go-getters and bring a lock cutter.

We always keep our garage door closed, it's become a habit to come home, park in the garage, close the door. When we work outside, we keep it closed. Initially - it was to keep critters out of the garage because we keep our extra fridge in the downstairs laundry room area off the finished rec room.

Looks like after the teens are drinking, they are breaking the bottles along the wooded trails. For the 2nd time in about 3 weeks there's broken bottle glass along a trail from Chickacoan to Gentle Heights.

Some teenagers (I suspect) sprayed mustard on three parked cars in front of my house about 11pm on Saturday (my wife was having a scrapbooking party). We were able to get it off, and I was not that ticked off, but I worry that someone may eventually pull a prank that does permanent damage.

Yes, I too have seen the broken glass on these pathways. I kicked it off the path as much as possible so as not to injure other walkers, animals, etc. There was also some about 4-6 weeks ago at the path right near the Waxpool and Claiborne intersection.
