Anyone know what's going on with that area? Looks like they drained it, took down a bunch of trees, and dug a trench. Why?

The wetlands area there was never designed to turn into the lake that it usually does. All those trees that have died have done so because the water would back up and the drains would clog. They are trying to clean it out and dig a trench to keep the water from draining.
I've informed Van Metre that the resultant deep trench, at the bottom of a slope from the walking path is a hazard. If someone were to fall, they wouldn't stop until they landed in that three feet deep muck of a trench.
