Even though we shake off our arbor vitae, they still look like they are splitting in half and turning brown inside. The bottom thirds are covered in snow. We haven't seen the smaller bushes in a long time, so we have no idea how they are doing. Are we all going to have dead trees to remove in the spring?

Sadly, they don't bounce back after they split. Looks like we're all going to be heading to the garden center to replace storm damaged trees this Spring. Our landscaper in Chicago told us to stay away from the arbors with multiple trunks. There are varieties that have a single trunk which hold up to winter weather much better.

Up north we used to wrap shrubs in burlap and tied it around the base. For multi-stem ornamentals we wrapped garden twine (in thirds) around the trunks pulling them together. It did the job.

When you replace them, use Emerald Green Arborvitaes. That's what we have and they are fine.
Sending Koas girl out todau to brush out the remaingin snow. As for our three Sky Rocket Junipers plated this fall, they are bureid on there side, so I guess those will have to be replaced.

Also if you have and Holly trees (Nellie Stevens) you better get the snow away from them as they don not like lots of water.
