Just drove by the Nature Center and a huge, willow tree was down. It was between the pond and Claiborne and fell towards the road.

That willow took a huge chunk of ground with it too. I went by there and took a couple of pictures.

Lost a window. Our patio umbrella took off and waged wrath against the house!

They should be able to pull it back in place, and hopefully be able to tie it down somehow. Most of the roots are still intact.

Neighbor has a major backyard construction job going on. Contractor brought in a dons john that is out on the road by the curb. You guessed it, it blew over in the storm. Luckily I am up hill from it.

Also, lost a big old dead pine in the back yard. Definitely a problem, as it snapped about four feet off the ground and is now nestled securely against another tree. No telling were the torque is on that sucker. I am not touching it.

Some one will be looking at the willow this morning to see if it can be saved...

Unfortunately, the tree cannot be saved. We are all very sad here, too. It will be cleared away by the end of the day today.

Just curious, what was the reason that it could not be saved? As a layman it would seem put it upright and call it a day.

Because it is an old tree it's roots would not recover as well as a younger tree. By the time they would take hold the tree would be beyond "coming back"...also the tree fell away from the pond so there is no way to stake it since the stakes would be in the pond. I did have an arborist take a look at it, so we did get an expert opinion before deciding it could not be saved.

Thanks for the explanation. I figured you had an expert take a look, but was curious as to the reason. I feel like I learned something, never would have thought about the root structure on an old tree versus a new tree being able to recoup and such.!

Dreadful news about the willow. Will there be a tree planting ceremony in its honor?

Just for showing other storm damage, these fell just off the path at the corner of Vestals Gap and Claiborne. The huge tree fell and smashed into the smaller one, ripping it in half.

willow's are great trees, but not very long-lived and susceptible to storm damage.
