I hope all you smart people can help this dumb chick out. I have my popup blocker set on it's highest level and cannot figure out why some popups still get through. The only ones that get through are always from "NSIS Media". And it always happens the same way: one little box pops up for a second, then goes away. Then one second later, a second little box pops up and goes away. Then, one second later the third and final box containing the ad pops up and stays until I close it. It drives me nuts! When I'm on a website that I WANT a popup from I have to use my control key or "temorarily allow" popups from that site. But somehow NSIS has figured out how to slip one past the goalie and I don't know how to stop it.

Any ideas how I can get rid of it? Thanks!!

I know you're going to hate my answer, but stop using IE and start using Firefox instead. You'll be amazed at the amount of crap it will keep away from you...

I actually have Firefox installed. Just got so used to ie. (I used to work at Microsoft, which I'm reluctant to tell you, lest you never speak to me again.) :hide:

    But I'll try it.

Oh, I use Microsoft Windows at work and on a machine at home; I'm not one of those Linux wackos that wants the whole world to run Linux. Sure, I think it's a superior OS for many things, but everything has its place...

I run a lot of Macs also, but I can't picture myself being called "Mr. Mac"

You'll also hate the number of sites it b0rk3s up!

Please stand by for the Browser Religious Wars that are about to ensue. They are fun to watch and contribute to the economy by increasing sales at the ABC store.

Mr. Linux - her problem sounds more like a Torjan or virus than a pop up problem - yes? No? Maybe?

Any way - get a decent virus package on your PC and see if that picks anything up. I highly reccomend Avast - it's free and finds things that Sym & McAf miss.

OK this is strange... I just clicked to open firefox and got the following dialog box:

"Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system."

Huh? I'll reboot now and see what happens.

Kaos... I have a full McAfee package... if I download what you suggest will it interfere, or just run right over the top?

Easy to fix: Launch your Task Manager (Right click on the task bar on bottom and click on Task Manager). Go to Processes Tab, click on Image Name to order alphabetically, and highlight the Firefox process. Click on the End Process button. You can now launch Firefox normally.

Looks like you had Firefox running before and it didn't exit properly for some reason.

If I were to take a wild guess, I would say she has an ActiveX module installed which the site is using to get past the blocker...

It will interfere; Avast is another AV package, like Norton is and McAfee is.

I just rebooted and tried to open Firefox and got the same dialog box. (So I'm here on ie again right now) Then I saw this message and looked at my Processes... no Firefox on that list. Might it be called something else?

You've probably already done this, but check your browser options for popups and make sure that nothing you don't want is listed in the "exceptions" type window.

I also recommend Firefox if you can get it working. In the processes window it would be labeled Firefox but you can check the applications tab, too and see what's running.

I've checked my exceptions, and the only ones there are ones that I've allowed. And I don't see Firefox on the processes or applications tab. Maybe I need to remove and reinstall it.

Firefox has an add-on that they recommend called Adblock Plus that you can try if you want even fewer ads.

I use the Flashblock add-on to give me the option of viewing flash videos/ads instead of them just starting automatically.

Yea, re-install it. If it's not in the process list, but you get that message, then I'm beginning to think something got into your computer which might not be 'very nice'....

'very nice' - is that technical term?

I'm downloading Windows Defender. If half of Southern Walk blows up you''ll know I did something wrong.
