Nobody goes to the Village Lanes off of Catoctin? Still has that 70's feel but is smoke free.

Peak price is $4.50 per game per person, goes as low as $1.75, shoes $3.90

Bowling at the new place is about the same price as going to a movie... and people still do that. Not me but maybe twice a year, but OTHER people.

True, true. I guess I just equate bowling to smoky, greasy, stinky places that are awesomely fun in their smoky, gresy, stinkiness (part of the ambiance)... Bowl America has some of the best pizza in town. And, years ago, we walked in and right back out of the alley in Leesburg due to the stench. But that's part of being a bowling alley...

One of my husband's and my favorite quotes is from the movie Arthur, when Sir John Gielgud tells Liza Minnelli, "One must usually go to a bowling ally to meet someone of your statue".

Oooh. A babysitting service would be AWESOME! We always take advantage of the Broad Run H.S. kids night out programs. Who can beat $10 for 4 hours of babysitting?

My first paying job was in a bowling alley nursery. It was mostly the same league kids week to week. I was 15, and they said if I stayed until I turned 16 I could move up to the snack bar, but I didn't last that long. It was horrible.

We gave the place a shot a couple weeks ago. Here's the breakdown:

Pros: The place is well appointed and new with a nice bar and three massive projection TVs behind the lanes showing sporting events. The service was reasonably good given that it has only been open a few weeks. They seemed to be doing well, as all the alleys were full on a Friday evening, even with nothing else open in the shopping center.

Cons: Obscenely expensive - 4 of us shelled out almost $400 before tip for 4 games, a few drinks, and some microwaved appetizers. The food was sub par, particularly at the high pricepoint. They have no shades on the west-facing windows, so we were blind for an hour during sunset. The ambiance is nice, but not as 'upscale' as advertised - there are video games and a prize counter (ala chucky cheese) for the kids. There's nothing wrong with this - we were just expecting more of a night club atmosphere based on the marketing.

In summary, we definitely won't be regulars. We may be back occassionally, but we'll eat dinner elsewhere in advance ;-)

I also went a couple weeks ago. First suggestion, going on a Friday or Saturday, get a reservation. We didn't' and there was a 2 1/2 hour wait, which we added our name on the list but decided to go to a different bar instead of staying. It is A LOT louder than I had hoped as it is much more kid oriented than what I'd imagine from advertising. I was envisioning much more adult/loungie atmosphere than what it ended up being. The bar area wasn't bad and fair prices for happy hour. So all in all, eh, probably just go to Drainsville bowling alley as it is cheaper.

sounds like they will suffer fromthe "trying to be all things to all people" syndrome. my kid wouldn't notice or care about all the fancy stuff- he just wants to bowl. i'd be willing to pay more for a "grown up" ambience, but if i'm taking my kid bowling- he LIKES the traditional bowling alley vibe!

either cater to adults, or cater to families- attempting to straddle will close you DOWN. ask Village Grill, Cafe Panache oh wait.. you can't. :shakehead:

Holy guacamole, $400 for a night out bowling is a bit much.
