Need Advice 529s.. now the right time?

    Is now the right time to open a 529 for the kids? Wondering if with today's economy it's a good idea now, or bad idea and the money should stay in cash. Kids are currently 1 and 3 yrs old. Looking at the VA American Funds CollegeAmerica 529. Thanks.

    That was one of the main factors in our considering, and buying the pre-paid (VPEP). I was not sure that between our contributions and performance, we would have enough reserved for our 2... 6 months and 4.5 year olds. What I also like is locking in the price of a 4-year degree now and having them paid for in the next 3-5 years. I will be flexible with my finances for covering other expenses as needed... room and board. Just food for thought but I also think you should get them started now either way, time is on your side.
