I am a new resident to Ashburn and Virginia and I'm suprised to see that for an area that is so young, probably younger than most in the nation, there are no adult sports leagues. I'm 3 weeks old in Ashburn and starving for some 1) pick up basketball and 2) Softball.

How come there are no leagues? I'm am looking to join a softball team and find some pick-up basketball or what I believe it's called in VA, "drop-in." Is there a regular game(s) somebody can point me to?

If I cannot find a team, I'd be interested in starting a team if anybody is interested in playing - basketball, softball, baseball, flag football...any and all should do...

If I cannot find a league, I'd be interested in starting a league. I'm sure with the age of this area, we'd field 8 teams the first year and double every year after.

    I would appreciate any/all recommendations and/or volunteers.

    Thanks.
    Gary

yep, thank you. I have already put my name down on a "free agent" list with about 8 others...if I found 5-10 more, we could probably start a team on our own....

Where did you go to sign up as a free agent. It has been some years since I have played but would love to get back into it.

I actually called this Phone #: 703-771-5211 and gave my name to the guy who's running the softball league. Wouldn't it be great through if we were able to field and "all-Broadlands" team? I don't think we'd be able to get in the league this year - but - we can at least get a team together and ready for the next year. If there's another interest, and we drum up some interest from the other communities in Ashburn (Village, Farm, Belmont, etc) - I'm sure it wouldn't take to much time to get an all-Ashburn league together.

We'll see how many reply and how many are interested...

I'm also interested in playing some pickup basketball - do you know of any games in town?

Thanks for the info. I will definitely look into it. Also want to see if there are any fall leagues. I see some folks playing basketball over by the SW Nature Center but do not know of regular game times and I do not play......really short and throw mostly bricks and air balls.

There is a fall league, but, unless we'd be able to field a team this week - I just don't think we'll be able to get into the season.

I've contact Loudoun Rec. re; how we could start our own league here and one idea I had would be if we involved the other communities in Ashburn. I think it would be pretty cool if each are fielded a min. of 4 teams, played a season, with some interleague play and then a world series ... - matching community versus community...

Meaning: Ashburn Village, Belmont, Broadlands, Brambleton...etc.

Could be a lot of fun and bring the whole town together for the playoffs.

Regarding basketball - I'm going to start a new thread to see if I can get a regular pick up basketball game together.

I'd love to play softball out here. I think a neighborhood team is a great idea.

Last year I played in a Fairfax adult league, and driving to Springfield for weeknight games was a nightmare.

I guess what we need everybody to do is talk it up with your neighbors who you feel may also be interested and have them post on this thread - this way we'll be able to capture everybody and get organized.

So, here's the update - I contacted the Loudon County rec. dept and this area only has 1 field which could be used for softball which is already being used by the Loudon county league. So, I'm going to start a new thread later this winter and look to start an "all-Broadlands" softball team to enter into the league. Shouldn't be that difficult to find 15 players - right?

Yep - checking out men's baseball...actually played an exhibition game with some guys 2 weeks ago. First time I pitched in 13 years. Regarding flag football - have yet to hear anything about that? Why, interested? Think we can field a team?

I know that fall is fast approaching. I saw some previous posts suggesting pick up basketball by the Southern Walk. I would like to try to join an existing arrangement (please notify me if you know of one), or propose a new one.

If there is not a current meeting time, would anyone prefer a weekday night, say around 6pm (gives us about 70-80 minutes before the sun sets), or a weekend. Unfortunately I normally work on Saturdays so I would propose Sunday around noon if on a weekend.

I tried Sat. morning to no avail but yes, would love to try and get something started during a weeknight. How about Thursdays at 6:30pm at the Nature Center? Would that provide us enough daylight to play? Do you know anybody else who may be interested?

6:30pm is a little late, but we can only take what people can get. Why don't we say meet between 6 and 6:30pm on Thursday September 7th. Let's all try to push hard and try to get 8-10 guys. I think with a good push, turnout might be better now that everyone is back in town.

I have been playing at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg every monday at 4pm. The turn out, competition, and organization, is really good, but I have a hard time getting off by 4pm.

that sounds great - th, 6pm it is. - Nature center. Even if the turnout is light first time around - if we keep promoting, we should be able to pull together a regular game with players waiting.

The next goal will be securing an indoor gym at a local school for the winter.
