From what I am reading, it seems that AOL has shifted to a 100% advertisement-based revenue model (no longer subscription-based).

As NYC is the center of the advertisement world, it makes strategic sense to move business decision-making there.

I don't think that there are any negative connotations with Loudoun County involved here.

Woodland Park has a Herndon Zip but the development is on the south side of Dulles. SO even Herndonites say it's not Really in Herdon.

There's an old phrase (and title of a great Chris Youlden, former lead singer of Savoy Brown before he fried out his brain on heroin, song):
"Little cog in a big wheel."
That's all AOL had been since Time Warner bought it. What they are doing is not new. They've been moving executives out of Loudoun to Manhattan for a while now.
I'm not convinced this will have any real negative effect at all. If they close the whole thing down and move all the jobs, that would be an impact.

    Mr Linux-
Ever since they removed all the trees across from the entrance to his neighborhood and the Developer won't listen to him and build their project the way he wants, he's on a tear!!

    ------------

It's not within the city of Herndon. It's a Herndon address though. And it's in Fairfax not Loudoun. I used to live right down the street at Worldgate.

Anyway it doesn't sound like they're bring in too many people.

    http://loudounextra.washingtonpost..../sep/17/aol-employees-weather-news-hq-change/

In this article says their are rumors that 25 percent of the company could be laid off by christmas.

For you traffic fans it said these lay offs will increase traffic not decrease it, as the layoff people will have longer commutes to their new jobs. The picture I get is now you have increased traffic going past aol on to 28 and spread out all over the place instead of just to AOL.

My guess this is the beginning of the end of AOL just like what happened to MCI after verizon took over. The guess is who will eventually want the space at AOL that is not next to other quality developments that are to sprout up all over rt 7. Quality wants to be near quality.

This is a wake up call for Loudoun, we should look and grow better and have learned from bad neighbor developments from other high growth areas. Fairfax has learned this lesson over the last years and is growing with first class development rather then today placing as much bad neighbor developments on every corner. The areas of fairfax that did have stagnated and crime has risen.

Unfortunately as the article says as people get laid off from AOL traffic will get worse not better. Interesting isn't it?????

isn't AOL the reason for those 2 stupid turn lanes on waxpool that are separated, causing idgits who aren't paying attention to turn from the STRAIGHT left most lane and therefore almost getting rear-ended...?

There are RUMORS that on 12/24/2024 the aliens will return to Earth and we will all be eaten.

There are RUMORS that Nostradamus is right.

    So is Edward Cayace.

    And Fred the clairvoyant phrog.

And that Bush has a strategy to "win" in Persia.

    Which shall I listen to?

as a battle hardened vet with 10 years under my belt at AOL, layoffs are a comin'. Every year ... in December. The "Annual AOL Christmas Bloodletting". They also usually do a smaller one in the fall. I don't know if it will be 25% (thats quite a bit) but there will be something.

Lee, I don't know if you've been INSIDE those AOL facilities lately, but everytime that I have recently, I've seen them LOADED WITH SUB-CONTRACTORS. So, yea, there's been a rumor that up to 25% of the workforce in there 'could' be laid off, but a good slice would be replaced by subs. It's just the way they've been running things there over the past few years.

Yea, but see that crane on the right? It's building an Architecturally Beautiful building built by a Good Neighbor, so that all the folks stuck in traffic can have something nice to look at as they reach for an empty bottle in the back seat...

Oh, and that guy on the bike on the bottom-right, that's Cliff doing his usual rounds of the development :notfunny:

An empty bottle? Dude, if I had to drive that the bottles I'd be reaching for would NOT be empty.

(When I first saw that photo I thought it was the FDR. :notfunny: )
