Just saw on local TV that AOL is laying off 5,000 workers. How is that going to affect the Ashburn area ??

AOL currently employs 19,000 around the world, about 5,000 in northern Virginia. Lots of jobs in the area. No worries.

Lots of jobs in the area.. yes.. enough that everyone is going to find a comparable or better job at a blink of an eye?? No

There is a reason people are not job hopping everywhere anymore. Its back to a employer's job market right now.

3,000 of those jobs appear to be in a European division that AOL is planning on selling off, so not all of those would be in the US, much less Ashburn.

    From http://money.cnn.com/2006/08/03/technology/aol_cuts/index.htm?cnn=yes

So those 5k jobs may or may not come out of the sale of the European division.

About 400 for sure at the aol HQ Dules some already have left on paid leave. Could be as many as a thousand at Dulles. The bigger problem for layoffs could be HomeLand Security and their contractors which is one of the largest employers in Loudoun, I understand there are rumors of major restructuring in the future to streamline in the future.

From what I read, "they" weren't sure if the 3000 jobs in Europe were part of the 5000 layoffs or not.

    Lee,
Again - I am not sure what you base your "the sky is falling" opinions on. True, DHS will most likely have a restructure BUT with the amount of agencies that fall underneath and considering it is just about the only area where the government is growing, I doubt if there was a restructure it would harm the larger consulting companies in this area.

True ... they're selling off the division. I don't know how selling a division could be called 'letting go' of people.

I do suspect that some marketing types, as well as communications and help desk employees will be laid off.

    Re: AOL Shakeup !!

Well as you see I don't post much here anymore which probably makes most happy around here :D
Hey call me doom and gloom if you want to.

Knowing what is going on and potentially is going to happen to the economic base here, is important to me and others around me as it can effect our income immensely. I design for many of the so called movers and shakers not just here but in other parts of the world. So I hear a lot of things off the record and I will leave it at that.

Just like the housing crash that I said would happen and I believe the worst is yet to come. Sometime in the coming year there will be a leveling off and possibly even a little spike up in prices then you will see it fall bigger then ever, maybe even several more times and this could go on for 4 or 5 years more.

Democrats are going to take over after the next few elections including the president, which will effect the military and homeland security and many other dept of the federal goverment. The only the reason I say homeland security is has grown too big and fat with way too much waste. Not to mention the fact too many people have used it to jump into fat paying jobs in the private industry while only working there for as little as a few months. I see a possible scandal brewing especially when the dems take over in the next few years. It doesn't help when when one of their top people is caught in a child pron sting, absolutely disgusting.

This is not doom and gloom it is just common sense reality.

I was very surprised but not shocked that Barbara got nominated for planning commision. Great for South Riding maybe. Unfortunately Snow has seem to forgot lately he represents all of Dulles not just where he lives.

To quote Burton when he saw Barbara was nominated he said you got to be kidding. I don't know Barbara personally but I don't like her very narrow point of view and the fact she goes off on anyone that doesn't agree with her. Doubt that she will be voted in, but who knows. Yes I am all for Greenvest, density and all, but with major major changes. It will never pass the way it is now and the way it is promoted and I have told Mr Snow privately what I think he should do to get acceptable to the public and surrounding counties. I doubt he is going to listen and he is doomed to failure if he keeps trying to cram this down our throats the way they are doing it now. Now Barbara the attack dog possibly getting involved officially , well this is going to be interesting and very lively.

That is all I got to say for the next six months and I am sure that will make most happy here :D

    Goodbye for awhile!!!

    Lee,

I'm glad we've heard the last of you for awhile. Just where have you been during the last and current corrupt administration? We haven't seen the worst? Wake up and smell the coffee and please, learn correct grammar.

Lee's a good contributor to many of the issues debated within this forum. One does not have to agree with everything to get value out of the opinions.

I for one would like to see Lee continue contributing. I enjoy his thought provoking commentary.

If what he says does not sit well with you, speak up, join the debate or just ignore it.

Wow thanks afgm for the kind words. I will just say I have a very thick skin and the off comments about me don't bother me a bit, and at times I think they are funny, but they certainly don't bother me. My grammar may not be up to par with some here, yet I made excellent grades in English in College. There is an unwriiten rule on the internet that you don't comment on ones grammar, but if you must then have at it, I ignore those comments anyway. I just write like I speak at times, and often don't have the time to double check everything. Like afgm says my opinions are my opinions and they are formed from information I get from very good sources. I certainly can't predict the future, but can make a very good educated guess such as about the housing markets ups and downs, which is an industry that I am very well entrenched in and know personally some of the big players here.

I do know where hoffa is buried but if I tell you, you might end up swimming with the fishes. :) same with the lotto numbers

The real reason I don't post here much anymore is I don't have the time and the little time I do have I post on my professional forums where the debates there make this place look like childs play. ha ha

Yes I got several private postive emails this weekend telling me to keep on posting here and not one negative email. They also gave me a little insight on the people here that make some of these strange posts about me and they were not too kind toward several of you. ha ha

Yes I do plan to keep posting here when I have something to say or comment on and believe me nobody can get under my skin, but hey I don't mind a bit if you keep on trying. ha ha

    Thanks afgm

First - I did not ask Lee not to post. I find his postings interesting as well, second - I choose to respond so I am not sure where you are going with your post or who it was directed at. I was disagreeing with him - which is why I enjoy his posts so much. Just because I find some of his views the same old rant - that's just my two cents. I find it important to keep banter light and a sense of humor helps.

Lee - you don't own a swimming pool do you?

hberg it wasn't directed at you. Oh and by the way Hoffa was buried in more than one place, so to assume Lee knows "the" location is overlooking the whole truth.:)

Maybe they will find part of Hoffa when they build the hospital - just kidding, do not want to get that thread going. Speaking of thread - Lee is jammin' on the Politics thread as of late.
