Saw this in the "news" section - thought I'd pull it over here.

Always a lively topic around here.

My assessment went down by about 1% this year. Funny part of that is the LAND value for my property increased by $25K. Id like to know why the land keeps getting a higher assesment. Pretty soon it will be equal to my houses value on it.

Does it really matter ... at the end we will all end up paying more tax .... higher rate + lower assessment ( recently ) ... lower rate + higher assessment ( during bubble ) ...

I think you have broken the code here.

The powers to be decide on how much more to charge home owners. Then they decide whether they can up the tax rate or up the assessment. They will decide based on what they feel is more politically acceptable.

Soon I wager they will try to raise both the tax rate and the assessment. :(

In the end we pay more taxes

Yep. The assessments in this county never matter. Taxes always go up.

Mine went down less than 1%. Shocking considering our neighbor moved out in September and the house remains unsold, with an $80,000 price drop so far.
Whatever - when it's under assessed people screech, when it's over assessed people screech. I'm not moving any time soon.

Ours went down 6% from its 2008 tax value... but that is still higher then the assessor pinned it at when we just refinanced.

our old townhome dropped 16% from its 2008 tax value

Down 6% overall, land value remained the same. I was hoping for a bigger drop.

    Down 8%.

I understand that it is hard getting comparables since nothing is selling but come on.

The Washington Post says our area has dropped over 35% since last year.

Zillow shows my home dropping 21% with a value $75,000 less than the county assessment.

Time to take a day off work and go challenge the old assessment again.

35%?? no way. Not even foreclosures were down that much. Off their peak? Certainly, but not in the last year.

Yup, we are down about 22% on the building but the land stayed the same. It's all a game. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
