    Hi,
does anyone know if the deli in the Farmwell Hunt Plaza (Bloom shopping center) with the word "Bagels" over it has a name? My wife and I had a very tasty lunch there over the weekend but couldn't find the name of the joint printed or displayed anywhere....

If the owners of that shop watch the forums, thanks for a good meal!

It's Ashburn Bagel Shop (as far as I remember). It's sometimes affectionately referred to as Karate Bagels in our house because when we first bought our house here, the Karate sign was right next to the Bagels sign making it seem like it was part of the bagel shop's name.

We call it Karate Bagels as well (for the same reason). Actually, the old owners used to make a bagel called a "Karate Bagel". It was a jalapeno bagel, with cream cheese & loaded with other hot peppers.

The bagels are decent. I've found the service to be so awful on Sunday mornings, though, that I rarely get fresh bagels from them anymore.

And I remember when a dance studio was on the other side of it and we called it Karate Bagels Dance. :) I think it's called Ashburn Bagels also.

Too funny - we call it Karate Bagels Dance too!

I love their bagels and sandwiches too. They do get busy on weekends, but considering it's the only mom-and-pop bagel place around, we deal with the crowds.

If any of you attended the SBHS Graduation, the class president pointed out that if you lived in Ashburn you know that the "Karate Bagle Dance" had nothing to do with Rap. :D

She also pointed out that it meant nothing to you if you stayed on the same road and it changed names five times!

Re: "Bagel" Shop--at Bloom (Food Lion) Shopping Center?

    technosapien and others--

The name of the bagel shop is called--ASHBURN BAGEL TUCK-IN CAFE. The bagel shop is located at 43930 Farmwell Road,
Suite #128--in the Ashburn Town Square (Farmwell Hunt Plaza). Phone number is (703) 858-5883. It is located where the old Food Lion (now renamed Bloom) is located--near the new IHOP.

    Good eats--

    We were there this AM--

We need a good bagel shop in this area. That place is edible, but not great. Any entrepreneurs out there? You'd make a killing in this area. Just grab a few recipes for some real NY bagels and a small business loan.

    SchwarzFamily,
Bagel Buddies in Fair Lakes has IMHO the best bagels in Northern Virginia. The owner is a transplanted New Yorker and makes the bagels the traditional way (boiling them before baking) using fresh dough. He also makes bialys and great marble rye and imports some NY specialities (true kosher dill pickles, knishes). It's definitely worth the trek. Also, Chutzpah is not a bad approximation of a NY deli.

The best bagels I've found in this area are at Safeway first thing in the morning.

How about Bread Unlimited? I thought their bagels were pretty good. Has anyone else been?

Actually Karate Bagels has very authentic NY-style bagels. When my family comes to visit from Brooklyn they're always very impressed that we have decent bagels here. The secret, according to the owner, is that he filters his water so they won't taste "chalky".

The reason NY's bagels are the best is the quality of the city's water.
