In all the years of home ownership - I've never had this happen. Does anyone know if this could be a "do it yourself" project? When I turn the fan on - it just makes a humming noise....Any thoughts as to what the problem could be?

could be gunked up with lint/dust, etc. You could try pulling it down and trying to clean it out. AFAIK, these are just self-contained units. Sounds totally like a home depot job.

It is a pretty simple job if you are replacing the unit with one that is similar. For example if the old unit had a light and fan, and the new one is the same it should be easy to do. If the new unit has a heater, night light , etc then you may need to upgrade the circuit to a 20AMP one. The one in my house was on a 15AMP circuit and I had to run a new line to get it to 20AMPS to install the new unit.

    Good luck.

And be sure you get one that has some power to it. Some of those don't have enough power and suction to hold a Kleenex up there.
