black widow spider

    I just spotted a black widow spider today. It had a web at ground level where the front of our garage meets the corner of the driveway. I wanted to get a picture, but by the time I was back with my camera it had hidden in a shadowed corner. I did a quick search online, and I'm certain that it was a black widow. The red hourglass on the black body was unmistakeable. I've never seen one before personally, but from what I read they're somewhat common. Fortunately they're not as dangerous as folktales suggest, since they're not aggressive, and rarely fatal to humans. Nevertheless, I'll be buying some insecticide and doing my best to get rid of it. It's pretty creepy.
