That's faulty logic. Bringing a risk that resides 24/7 near the place you reside 24/7 is not the same thing as flying. The same thing would be bringing in a prison and there would be some small chance of a jail break but you wouldn't want that would you or would that make life more interesting. Maybe for you but if that prisoner kills someone you love are you still for the excitment? If some wacko anti-abortionist bombs the clinic while you're walking through the door is it still worth it?

I think the abortion concern is over hyped too but I don't want to see the protesters there. People protest everything nowadays and they don't care that it affect the common man who just wants to live. Look at the WTO protests that happen every year.

Does anyone have any data about wether Reston and Loudoun hospitals perform those services and if so has there been any protests.

As I've said before this thread is dead anyway until the Commish votes next year. Why bother arguing about something that is not even close to happening?

    Chris-
You posted...."Not every hospital in the area offers this medical procedure."
Which ones don't? Stephanie, since you started this issue, do you know?
I have lived here over 6 years ans don't recall any anti-abortion protests at hospitals in Northern Virginia. Does anyone else?
The link you provided should a group that toured many sites in Charlottesville/Albemarle County. One of their stops was a hospital, but it wasn't the only target. If a group like that chose to tour this area, who knows how many places they would stop?

As I mentioned in an earlier post to this fourm, Georgetown, the most prestigious academic medical center in our area, does not offer the service.

I have talked to HCA and confirmed that they will not allow elective abortions to be performed at the Broadlands Regional Medical Center. So you can take protesters off of your list of reasons to oppose the hospital.

Hey, I thought you were "done" with this forum.:)
    Are you back now?
This is great news you brought us. Most hospitals do not do abortions
so this is really no big surprise for me.
This is such a nice neighborhood.
Why do we want to clutter it up with a big hospital? Ashburn Farm and the Village don't have a feature like this and they have a calm atmosphere in those communities.
Why on earth would anyone want to have a hospital in a neighborhood like this???

Not so fast! Is HCA willing to put that in writing? We all know that HCA has a corporate history of deceit and fraud. (Search these very forums for articles referencing that fact). I bet everyone here that HCA would NEVER put this promise in writing!
And just to be clear, VW, I am not saying that I do not trust you, just HCA.

I will only believe it when I see it in writing, AND I doubt that will happen!

Also, who is working on the poll of the residents? I know that the hospital is dead, but I think HCA is like bad guy in a horror flick: just when you think he is dead, he comes back to torture you.

I ask because I hope that the poll is done scientifically. For example, I would hate to see questions like "Given the choice between having a hospital in the Broadlands and a tortured death at the hands of a horror flick bad guy, do you support the hospital?" With what we have seen in Loudoun County political surveys recently, this is outside the realm of possibility!

I hope that the HOA still does not plan on conducting the survey itself. They obviously are baised. No offense VACLIFF, but we do know your stand on the issue.

    Chris-
Yes the HOA will conduct a poll. I hope to have it out by mid December. The questions will be very basic. Something like:
    I support the hospital.
    I don't support the hospital.
    I don't care if there's a hospital.
I don't have enough information about the hospital.
Since the HOA represents the community, who else would you suggest to conduct it?

Would it be possible to suggest that the HOA contract with a neutral third-party to conduct the survey? If the HOA does not use a third-party, I think that some people might question the results. If a neutral third-party were used, both sides should be able to trust the results. If the HOA conducted the survey and tallied the votes, it would appear to be a conflict of interest given the ties of some of the HOA members.

What is the purpose of doing a survey? The hospital has been turned down at every single turn. The final decision will be made by the State director of health, based on recommendations made by the boards. Those recommendations have already been made. There are no more public hearings. What would a survey accomplish besides wasting money and time?

    I agree
HCA should pack it up and take it out of here.
Broadlands should build an indoor pool and rec facility on that property.
A hospital should be build somewhere else.

That will never happened as that parcel of property is zoned already for specific use - I think.

    Chris-
The additional cost/time/effort to have a "neutral third party" conduct a survey would not be of any significant benefit. The HOA represents the residents, so the HOA will conduct the survey.
Yes, the majority of the HOA Board supports the hospital, but that will not have any effect on how residents respond to the survey. The votes will be tallied by our General Manager, and not the Terrabrook employees who have ties to the sale of the property.

SK8R-Who will pay for the Indoor Pool and Rec facility, and who will pay for the rezoning of the property?

Thank you for the response. I find it incredibly enlightening especially since you openly admit that the HOA is incredibly biased about hospital.

Most of the board is made up of the developer so it's no surprise that they're for something that makes a profit. What the hospital will do to property values is anyone's guess. The real interesting thing is what will the board do if the residents say "No" in a mandate. Will the board go along with that? I doubt it. When does the HOA get turned over to the homeowners?

Doesn't the developer have a vested financial interest in improving property values and helping Van Metre sell more homes in Southern Walk? It seems that they stand to make a profit if the Southern Walk/Broadlands area succeeds (i.e., the more homes sold, more HOA fees). I admit that I'm not familiar with the inner workings of the developer, etc., so I could be wrong.

That being said, if, in fact, the developer has a vested financial interest, then why would they want to bring in a hospital that would destroy home values? Either they haven't done their research, or the hospital would be good for home values.

    Wick-
I have an independent report from an appraisal firm that shows that there is no difference in the value of properties based on distance away from a hospital.
I have also spoken to two appraisers whose predominant area of business is Ashburn. Both indicated that a hospital would not have a negative impact on property values. They also stated an office park would not have a negative impact.
I will be happy to share more details with anyone interested. Send me an email or give me a call.
    Homer-
The HOA will be controlled by the resident members at about 70-75% build out. This is in about three years. Also, 2 of the 3 resident members of the Board support the project. I'm not sure of the opinion of the third member.

For those that wonder if we need another hospital, consider the article in the Loudoun Times Mirror yesterday:
"Emergency rooms in Fairfax close doors."
The article states both Reston and Inova Fair Oaks closed their doors to new admissions on Tuesday. This is called a reroute which means an incoming ambulance will be sent to another hospital. Loudoun Hospital could not pick up the overflow due to their two hospital facilities being full. Loudoun, with 145 beds, had 151 in-hospital patients. The hospital stated it was full and one step below reroute.

We continue to add about 1500 residents to Loudoun county monthly, with no signs of slow down in sight. It appears to me there is no question we need more medical facilities, and although many do not approve of the location, a new hospital is needed.

If you needed emergency care, do you feel comfortable knowing the nearest hospital that could accept you is Inova Fairfax? To me, that's a scary proposition. The speed at which a critical patient can can get to a hospital is often the difference between life and death. Here we are in one of the most educated, wealthy, and dynamic areas in the country and the nearest hospital bed is at least 45 minutes away.

This is an entirely unacceptable situation.

Another article you might want to read appearded in the Post 2 days ago about helicopters and how often they are used and the amount of deliveries and pick ups they do. NO ONE is disputing we need another hospital in Loudoun...JUST NOT Here. Consider, if HCA succeeds then again we will only be down to one hospital because LHC will have to close their doors because they will be competing for the same patient load, the same services, the same doctors, etc...
