I heard on the radio about a child in Ashburn being killed by another child using a family's gun that just happened to be lying around the house!!! Anyone got any news on this? It was new to me! What's the scoop?

...and Dear Heaven Above, when will this state/country pass some reasonable and sane gun safety laws???

It was earlier this week in Ashburn Village. The incident involved multiple teenagers in the basement of a home, I believe the victim was a 15 year old who attended Broad Run H.S. According to news reports the night of the incident, an adult was also in the home at the time. (Sorry if I have any details wrong... I've been out of town since Tuesday.)

Not a family gun laying around. Police found a 9mm along with a sawed off shotgun, cocaine, pot and mushrooms. This is not the tragic "accident" with the family firearm. It may have been an unintentional shooting but those involved appear to be far from innocent. It's still sad to see things like this happen though.

Thanks for the info. I hate hearing about these things...especially so close to home.

Due to the fact these are juveniles involved in a tragic incident, with speculation being the driver for comment, I think it best we not take this threat much further.

This is a really a tragedy and the "far from innocent" is all too common here in Ashburn. I have had two kids in Broad Run and Stone Bridge. Half of the kids are great respectable kids, the other half are spoiled and horrid. The behavior of many kids I have seen in our high schools in the past 5 years is appalling. This needs to be a wake up call to all parents and those that care about children. Love your kids and most importantly, be a good example to your kids in all areas of your life. Your kids are watching you and learn what is acceptable and law abiding behavior.

I have 4 kids, the oldest just turned 13. My eyes and ears are open 24/7 with anything they want to tell me or talk about. Keep an open line of communication between you're children at an early age and hopefully it will carry over into the teen years. Tragedies like this can happen in any community, no matter how "upscale", which has just been proven.

I rented over there four years ago. That area was begining to decline. The house values dropped and the homeowners left the neighborhood to renters. Some of which were not such good neighbors.

Oh I agree with you DAD4. You need to start early. The kids can not avoid the things and behaviors that they see in H.S. They need to be confident at an early age in making decisions on their own when they are with their friends. My daughter has shown up at girl friend sleep over birthday parties where they are showing R rated "gross" movies. She has to call and say "I'd like to come home now..." while her so called friends like to think she is a prude. Of course she does have some very nice friends too...
