FWIW ... I seem to remember that permanent poles and attached hoops are allowed but they must conform to the 20 foot rule. Which actually limits their installation to poles in the middle of the backyard on many of the lots in Broadlands.

Now the new lots going in over at Belmont Ridge & Truro Parish may actually be able to put permanent hoops on their drives, but then poles in the front yard tend to distract from the million dollar homes that will be built.

So I don't understand why the homeowner didn't submit an application for a permanent hoop. It seems that is the desired effect anyway, since I can't imagine that they use 7 sandbags, and constantly bring it in at night anyway.

They would have to put it in the backyard and probably add an asphalt pad for playing, not to mention bouncing balls tend to ruin your own landscaping, not just your neighbors ;)

Yes they do. Basketball hoops can not be in the street or within the VDOT right-of-way. This right-of-way extends to just past the end of your concrete driveway apron, or just past the edge of the sidewalk (if you have one in front of your house.)

So Cliff, does this homeowner have the right to appeal the decision? I didn't think it was in the county's jurisdiction to rule on such a matter.

He did, he appealed the issuance of the notice about the sandbags to the BHOA Board. The BHOA Board is the final arbiter of the regulations in Broadlands.
