The OLN thread got me thinking...

Can anyone suggest some interesting routes starting to/from broadlands? Lately, I've been biking up the big hill on truro parish, up belmont to sycolin, and then out past the airport and back via the W&OD and up claiborne back to broadlands. That's like ~17 miles, which is good for a quick spin.

I'm not familiar with any routes...sorry I can't help you there. But as long as we're on the subject, and you please tell me where the W&OD hooks up with Claiborne exactly? How far from the Southern Walk area? My Bianchi road bike has been lonely for two years, thinking of picking it up again..

Currently access from Claiborne onto the W&OD happens at the northern extreme of Claiborne, at the edge of Ashburn Farm. Claiborne deadends there at Trailside Park.

From Broadlands proceed on Claiborne going North. Follow it to the end (several blocks past Stone Bridge HS). There is a small bridge to the west of Claiborne. Follow that path, past the roller hockey rink, and the W&OD will be right in front of you.

As a note, (posted earlier) Eventually Claiborne will be extended through Belmont Ridge CC and connected to Route 7. A bike/pedestrian/horse bridge will be constructed to cross over the extended Claiborne Parkway. There will continue to be bike access from the western side of Claiborne, albeit somewhat adjusted. There is a hope/plan to also have access from the eastern side of Claiborne.

Steve Snow has been helped facilitate dialog between Northern VA Regional Park Authority and the County to make this happen. If you see Steve, thank him for supporting this effort.
