Brassy's hubby here! Hi, how y'all doing?

I run the operations at another, local unmarked data center in the area. No government stuff, just commercial folks who need extra security. The stats cited above are all still accurate. You really can't sink a backhoe in many parts of our area without cutting someone's fiber. It's pretty obvious that the building by the ice rink is a huge govt. data center, we were just phishing for more intelligence (Please, comrade, to be ignoring our bumbleing efforts here. We are only here to be the friendly peoples that we are.).

Do you really think the building over on 28 is CIA? As it's nextdoor to BlackBird & RavenWing I thought it would be them, then they rent out space to <$agency_name$> Agency.

Getting back to the Ice Rink Property - WOWZERS! I've seen chiller plants before, but, Holy Moley! And the chilled water tanks are huge. Probably going to be nothing but blade servers. When they power that thing up all our lights are going to dim!

The real target would be the Mae East peering point in Tyson's Corner.

Datacenters aren't usually high-risk targets...it's the peering points that would screw your day up should they get hit.

I don't know what one you are talking about. Could be. There was a marketing reason for it to be so visible. One thing I know we got one of the highest prices in dc during the start of the recession back then. If not thee highest price.

Softball chick you are always too funny in your questions. Are you an interrogator for the CIA :) just kidding

Lee, there are some houses that you really should be so quick to claim. The one you speak of is, too put it nicely, fugly.

Did you also design the homes on Old Dominion near Spring Hill. We refer to those as "Chevron Estates".

Sometimes, there is no accounting for taste.

Well here is what I have to say ha ha ha :) Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. In my case the amount of money they pay me :D That is why suburbia is some ways becomes boring everything starts looking the same, which is not necessarily bad either. That is why these new town concepts have become so popular work live and shop and play close to home. Brambleton is as close to that here in Loudoun or will be when done. Lansdowne is not very impressive so far just a strip center on steriods. Now, one loudoun, Kincora, especially the heart of moorefield will be on another level all together. Unfortunately the first phase of moorefield is not very impressive, hopefully the heart of it will come together.

    Each to his own!!!!!

The NOVA area has always been a critical Internet cross roads (more fairfax then out here). MAE East was one of the original public peering points where internet traffic 'traded off' between carriers. It's down in tysons. AOL was spread around the area.. and MCI was based in DC.

AOL built the campus to consolidate their operations. UUNet/MCI did the same later.

As time went on, public peering become old fashioned as it got overwelmed and most large providers went to direct peering relationships. But our 'history' was already in place with key players like ATT in Jersey, MCI here, UUNet, AOL, and other 'upstarts' like PSINet. Then of course being close to the federal center of the universe.. Fairfax County and then Loudoun (for space) has been an unsung focal point of the "internet" traffic lanes

Interesting, thanks. I worked at AOL for almost three years, but never got into the technical side of things.

Good to know a little history of the area.

Maybe you experts can shed some light on this. I thought the reason the dc area is the home of the internet and communications is because the military developed the forerunner of what we all call the internet. The DC area because of all the intelligence, government, and military was the natural place for this to develop.

When you guys find out who owns this new data center, please drop me a PM. I need a job closer to home. I'm getting a little tired of commuting round trip to DC every day

While Al Gore did not invent the webbernets, he certainly saved them. The funding for DARPA was about to be cut. Gore saw the value in what was happening (The WebberNets) and tied the DARPA funding to Education Funding. No one would vote against Education Funding, thus DARPA was funded.

    Update.....
The land is owned by "Grizzley Ventures LLC" per the Loudoun Records:
    http://inter1.loudoun.gov/cgi-bin/d...EX?pin1=060178810&currentYear=2007&pincount=1

"Grizzley Ventures" also has the same mailing address as Dupont Fabros:
    http://www.dupontfabros.com/properties/ashburn_phase_1/

Dupont bought up most of the old Exodus properties when Exodus exited. My friend and I chatted up one of the construction workers, all he knew was that it was "for The Government."

 Actually, he didn't specify WHICH government.

Well, darn it! Nothing exotic to expose here. My VP of Facilities got a tour of the plce. It's being build by Dupont Fabros on spec. It's all for lease in "pods". They do have some interesting technology in there tho.

Rats - I was hoping for an Area 54 in Ashburn!
