I've got a few questions about the new museum.

Is it free to get in, just you have to pay $12 to park? Just wanted to confirm before I venture over there. How is the IMAX? Pretty cool we have an IMAX this close now --- hopefully they'll play some theatrical movies (like matrix played on imax, etc) there at nights sometimes. I saw Memphis Belle at the IMAX in DC when it first came out with commentary from the director, producers, etc.

Can't wait to go! Is it alot bigger than the DC museum?

You better hope so, otherwise it won't be long before you're taking out mortgages to take to toll road to 28 to get there, then park, then get in! :)

Not us, only the welfare people who can't afford the toll road and parking.

You mean it isn't cheaper for low income people? That's not fair! Where is their compassion? [}:)]

Please. The income bashing has got to stop, folks, or at least move it to the POLITICS AND BELIEFS thread.

I went today and its fantastic. Yes the museum is free, but $12 to park is obnoxious.

Who wants to take me there. I have no income since Thanksgiving because my company ran out of money. Might have to go on welfare soon. Lucky for me it's cheap to live in Broadlands than say Ballston.

Especially since there is no mass transit! Is there a bus that goes there yet?

    Homer & Boomer -
There is a shuttle bus from the main Air & Space museum and coming soon there will be bus service from both Dulles & National Airports to the new museum.

Their website has some good info including the schedule of IMAX movies.

For a $7 charge per passenger, $5 per passenger for groups of 10 or more. Hmmm... Doesn't seem like the Smithsonian wants anyone to go there.

What do you mean they don't want anyone to go there? You'd pay that much (or more) to go to any of the Smithsonian museums downtown DC. (Parking or metro). Those museums don't seem to be hurting for visitors. 7000 people were there on opening day.

I guess they are inflating the prices so locals don't go. Even Kings Dominion charges less ($7 - https://www.kingsdominion.com/tickets_general_admission.jsp) and the Zoo charges less as well and it's limited in parking space!

It is possible to goto the Smithsonian on the mall for absolutely no cost other than gas if you are persistant about finding the space. It is not possible to go to the new annex for free now. I'd be willing to pay a reasonable graduated rate but a flat $12? What's next, charging admission into Aerospace?

And 7K is good opening numbers but I doubt it will be sustainable over a long period of time until they get some kind of local public transportation. Residents of Loudoun and Fairfax ought to be able to take a Metro bus there w/o going into DC just to come back again and then go back to DC to come back home. That's crazy!

Ok - so Kings Dominion charges less for parking but then you've got to pay another $35 just to get in. And as far as driving around DC looking for a free parking space...you're far more patient than I am.

Maybe we can all pile in Chris' SUV and carpool to the new museum. :)

SarasMom, sure we can! Let's have a grand old excursion to the museum--women, children, and folks from all economic classes can come because, unlike some on here, I don't think that women and those less fortunate than us deserve to be excluded from participating in society!

True, but I'm seeing more proposals coming out and more jobs being creted in my field then last few fiscal quarters before now.

I'll believe that the economy is doing better when unemployment drops to the historically lowest levels EVER, which we saw under Bill Clinton.
