    Broadlands Hosts 4th Annual
    Family Stream Day
    Saturday, October 8th 10am - 3pm
at the Community Center and Hillside Park

Loudoun Watershed Watch along with Loudoun County Sanitation Authority, Loudoun County Government, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, Potomac Conservancy, Potomac Environmental Council, Loudoun County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Broadlands Nature Center celebrate World Water Monitoring Day and the 33rd Anniversary of the US Clean Water Act with a day of environmental education and fun for the whole family.

Do you know your watershed address? Come find out! Where does the water from your streetside gutter go? Track it on county maps. Learn what a stream corridor is and how important a streamside forest buffer is to the quality of our community's water and the natural life within the urban streams.

Aquatic insects live in streams under rocks providing food for fish, turtles and frogs. Lots of insects mean a healthy stream. Loudoun Watershed Watch and its member organizations monitor aquatic insects and other water quality indicators throughout Loudoun County. Come see live aquatic insects and test the quality of our water from the stream in Hillside Park. Learn how volunteers monitor streams and coordinate their results with county government and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

How do trees and shrubs improve the community stream corridor in the Broad Run, Goose Creek and Potomac River watersheds? Learn what you can do to keep our rivers and streams in good condition for years to come.

Children's activies, crafts and games will entertain all age levels. Kids will enjoy stream related activities including a look at live stream critters. A hidden world lies under the rocks in our streams and tell us a lot about their health. Stream creatures need your help to protect their homes.

Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts of all levels can get information that will help complete a requirement or two in various outdoor and ecology related badges.

Students in many Loudoun County Public Schools participated in a poster contest. Their work will be on display inside the community center. Contest winners will be announced and prizes awarded at noon. Some teachers are giving extra science credit to students who attend, participate and bring back a filled passport.

Food will be available at Hillside Park for purchase. Come out and make a day of it or just fit a few activities in between soccer and football games. You won't want to miss this wonderful fun-filled FREE family outing.

On Saturday, since it might be raining a bit, all 10 festival booths will be inside the Broadlands Community Center. Come join us and see all the fun, enjoy learning a thing or two about your neighborhood water and the stream/pond life in your community :) Lots of family fun geared for the kids, too!
