I love a good fireworks show as much at the next person. Just not at 9:30pm on a random Monday in June. Or 50 yards from my house. And especially one that rivals the Independence Day fireworks display on the National Mall.

Thank you, and good night :)

People also need to know that aerial fireworks are illegal in Va. Not that I don't mind seeing them, but it seems that every year they go off on random nights up near hillside school for days after the 4th very late at night.

On a related note, according to loudoun.gov http://www.loudoun.gov/news/fireworks.htm the following areas will be hosting firework celebrations:

    -------
Another way to enjoy fireworks is to attend one of the many public fireworks displays that will be held throughout Loudoun County. The following areas of Loudoun County routinely hold public displays which are approved by the Fire Marshal:

Sterling, Dulles Towne Center Mall, Ashburn, South Riding, Leesburg, Purcellville, Hillsboro, Waterford and Middleburg. You may check the website listed above (www.loudoun.gov/fire/marshal.htm) for locations where approved displays will be held for the 2007 holiday.
    --------

The current locations PDF is here:

kcchoi's post was not lame. Anyone setting of fireworks at 9:30 on a random night is being selfish and inconsiderate of their neighbors. It's in my best interest to mow Saturday at 6am, I'm already awake and it's surely going to be a lot hotter at 9am; but, I don't do it out of respect for my neighbors.

FWIW ... I remember many a 4th in Broadlands when I sat outside my house with the water hose dousing the odd bottle rocket or aerial firework flotsum that happened to land on my lawn or garage roof overhang.

I don't know how many of those 'safe' fireworks decided to take a wrong turn and zip down the street nearly hitting cars or people.

When I was younger living in NJ, we all had illegal fireworks, from the small 'ladyfingers' to M-80's to aerial displays. We lit the 'crackers' in front of the house, but the aerial displays we all took to an open ballfield to shoot off.

Our fathers were often there, and they were worried about hitting the neighbor's house causing a fire, so they instilled in us a healthy respect for what these fireworks can do. However in this "me" generation, I think many have forgotten to respect and protect each other's property.

From what I've seen, it's the "Fathers", not kids, lighting off the big illegal ones on residential streets.

Guess I am lucky cause I havent heard fireworks on a weekday yet, and I am usually up late( I also notice fireworks and loud noises extremely well). Shooting off fireworks into the air is a horrible idea in this densely packed area. I guess people want to be able to run home should the police arrive or are just too lazy to go out.

I too remember times when I was a child in NJ where the adults would take everyone to an open field and shoot off illegal fireworks. Safety was always paramount at these displays and fire extinguishers and first aid kits were always present. But I also remember a time when I lived in tennesee and people would shoot rifles and handguns into the air in crowded apt complexes and trailer parks.

How about 11pm two weeks AFTER July 4th? That happened to me a couple of years ago. I went out and yelled at the adult man who was in a field about 50 feet from the townhouses setting off the big fireworks. He was out there with his wife and son - the son being about 10 years old.

I know people think fireworks are cool and who doesn't enjoy blowing stuff up, but really, there is a limit. Here's an example.

Lets not forget we are in a serious drought. Grasses are very dry - and that means fires can start very easily. All it takes is one spark, and brush fires can spread quickly.

    Kind of scary, isnt it?

    Cliff,

I know that quite well ... and they're often '3 sheets to the wind' when doing so. Please note, I was talking about my parents in the 50's, when neighborhoods meant that all the kids were outside playing on the sidewalks, or in someone's backyard. And when a mom yelled at you when you did something wrong, she had the full backing of your mom and dad, who were ready to smack your butt when you got home.
