I live very near to a green space, like a park without a playground, that is property of the HOA. My wife and I were talking yesterday about how when we were kids people on the block would all gather on a space like that and grill and hang out, play wiffle ball or wahtever.

My question is whether or not we would be able to use that space to have a "block party" for next fourth of july or whatever. And would we have to get some special permit from the HOA or VM? And of course this would all be relative to the amount of people interested. How many people on these bpards would be interested if someone in your neck of the woods tried to have a "block party"?

I think the question would arise, is this 'green space' wetlands or an area that is being set aside to grow as 'natural space'.

If its HOA common area, the HOA would have to worry about liability, who would do cleanup, etc.

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but those are the things the Board would have to think about.

I beleive it is just an area set aside to grow. There are benches and gazebos on the space as well as kids playing there quite frequently. I understand the liability and clean up(I would like to think that we as adults could take care of cleaning our own mess). And youre not being a wet blanket these are the kinds of answers I am looking for.

Its the little patch of land between Village Dr. Arbor Greene Way and Windover.

I would simply have the block party and not inform the HOA.

Oh, and I am on one of the committees! ;)

Hahaha...now the real question is where can I find an extension cord long enough for me to bring the kegerator out.

Are we supposed to inform the HOA when we're having a block party?

I only asked the question because it would involve using HOA green space. Im also just throwing out ideas because I am not sure how many people in my little area of B-Lands south(Village, Arbor Greene, Windover, Larchmont) would be interested.

I'm with T8 on this one--better to ask for forgiveness than permission. If you clean up after yourselves I doubt the HOA would care.

HOA common area is payed for by the residents and for the use of the residents. No permission from the HOA needed to use that area. That's what it's there for.

I would proceed with the planning as I truly doubt that the HOA would mind one bit.

I know the spot and it would be a great place for a gathering.

We live off Larchmont and would love to attend depending on the date.

    What Cliff said!

Yeah I saw cliff's post and thought "Well there is the answer." I will see if I can drum up any support on this. I think I am one of only 3 houses on my street that has people living on it.

It would be great if I could coincide this with the uncorking of this home brew I have aging in the basement.

Not so sure about that - and there's nothing wrong with restrictions. I pay my fees but I don't think that I own or can use the common areas as I see fit. That's the issue that was brought up on another thread. Isn't that why so many people don't clean up after their dogs? Oh, and never mind the garbage laying in plain sight of someone's front door but they refuse to pick it up because they didn't put it there? It's on common property after all!

I would like to see more areas undisturbed and without the litter and dog poop, etc.

We've noticed that your little, cute street is desolate. Ours right around the corner is, too. The house next door has been empty for 6 months and the house across the street has been empty much longer.

We're in for the block party and we'll be happy to help plan! We can celebrate our isolation!

Yeah, one of the houses right next to us is for rent, the one next to that is empty. On the other side our next door neighbors are moving and the ones next to them dont really talk to to us. I think it may have to do with the fact that we dont have kids that some people dont trust us.

Anyhow. What would be the best way to "get the word out" so to speak?

ok, that does it. Now that I have a pretty good idea where you live Mr Skull, and now, with you mentioning that the beer is almost ready... I am going to find you. There is nothing worse than tapping your homebrew with no one around to bask in its glory and taste test. And as if it helps, but what style/type did you go for with this one, maybe an IPA? Perhaps a pilsner?

And keep an eye out for the guy on a bike with a kid trailer circling your house this weekend. I will be looking for the tall, scary guy hanging out by the playground!

You might want to consider that Loudoun County does have a ordinance which disallows drinking in public...and also that the common area is for everyones use so you really can't restrict who you "invite" to to your block party...now that said, tell us more about this home brew ;D
