How/where to get rid of old mattress?

    we have a twin mattress that we need to get rid of... It's an old one, and our cat made a "mistake" on it couple of night ago, and I can NOT get the smell out of it... So,, my question is how to I discard this item?
    Can I leave it by the curb on a trash pick up day? Will they take it with them? Or do we have to take it to the landfill and drop it off? If we have to take it to the landfill ourselves, do we have to pay to discard it?

    You can leave it on the curb but call first to find out which day to leave it. We just disposed of one several weeks ago.
