Our family room carpet really take a beating with kids. We can't spend the money to have professional carpet cleaners come a million times a year. Has anyone discovered a home steam cleaner that works pretty well for typical household wear and tear with a 2 year old kid?

We have a bissel that we bought at costco. It does a pretty good job, and costs about the price of one professional cleaning.

I bought a used Dirt Devil Easy Steamer carpet cleaner from someone in Broadlands at the fall yard sales. It works pretty well for small areas but I haven't tried it for a full room. I got it to clean up during our long long long process of potty training our child. If you have a little child at home that may be in your future as well. :p

If you can find a good one - including the upholstery attachments - used someplace it probably would be a good investment. If not used, a new one might be a good investment, too, with a growing family.

The epinions website has ratings and reviews of carpet steam cleaners. The Bissell QuickSteamer Upright Vacuum has a lot of good reviews on epinions and gets 4 1/2 out of 5 stars from 60 reviews on Amazon.

We have a Bissel. It is hot water, not steam. I have a dog and have to do the family room and stairs at least once a year. The only negative is having to change the water with some frequency.
