Last Household Hazardous Waste Event of the Summer is Set for July 18

The Loudoun County Office of Solid Waste Management encourages residents to dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) at the last HHW event of the summer from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Heritage High School, 520 Evergreen Mill Road, Leesburg. Residents moving during the month of August will want to dispose of their waste during the July event. The next event will be held on September 19.

HHW includes items such as fluorescent bulbs, oil-based paints/stains/varnishes, paint thinners, metal polishes, rust removers, wood preservatives, furniture polish, waxes, bathroom, kitchen and oven cleaners, pool chemicals, old fuels including gas/oil mixes, kerosene and diesel fuel, and many others. Latex or water-based paints are not hazardous waste and can be dried or solidified and disposed of in your household garbage.

Used motor oil, antifreeze, automobile batteries, lead-acid batteries and propane tanks will not be accepted at any HHW collection events. They can be recycled year round at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility located on Evergreen Mills Road in Leesburg.

For more tips on proper paint disposal, identification of HHW, and the 2009 HHW event schedule, visit www.loudoun.gov/hhw or call the Office of Solid Waste Management at 703-777-0187.

I researched that and latex paint is not considered hazardous waste. Oil based paints and stains are, however.

For latex paint it was suggested that you leave the lid off to allow it to dry to a solid, then dispose of it with your regular trash.

HD has dropped their price on the latex hardening agent (its like $1.50 now), buy a few packets. The directions say one packet is for 2/3 gallon or so (from memory) but I used two packets on a nearly full 3 gallon bucket (I combined all of my left overs into the Behr 3 gallon paint can/bucket I had). It hardens in about 24 hours and then dispose in your regular trash. I've learned that unless there is very little paint left, leaving the lid off will not work at all.

We were using the "cat litter" method but that only works for small amounts. I will give the hardening agent a try.

Which part of the paint department do you usually find this stuff?

its right at the counter where they mix the paint at Home Depot. Right where all the mixing sticks are, etc.

Thank you. I will pick some up this weekend. The kitty litter thing is just too slow when you have full cans.
