I would like to thank the local candidates for placing flyers on my door. This action allows for Broadlands residents to be targets for criminals looking to burglarize our homes.

I am not sure how these actions are supposed to win my vote.

do you leave the house via the batcave entrance to avoid being seen leaving your home too?

I never buy or vote for anyone that leaves stuff at my front door. We always come/go via the garage, so the times we actually go out the front door it always frustrates me to see all the fliers from the cleaning/grass services.

There is the little box under all the mailboxes for these kind of things, plus it would save time to just throw it in there.

Most of the time with a candidate they (or someone from their campaign) was actually at your door wanting to speak with you and discuss your concerns, ideas, etc, or just let you know about themselves. So they are already at your door.

The candidate voluntarily comes to your door to ask what they can do for you - you might as well let them know.

Totally agree - after all they are there to represent you. I actually prefer it when the candidates come to my door. Less junk mail I get and I feel like they actually listened to what I had to say or feel I know when I am getting a BS answer.

I say that but apparently last week when someone rang our doorbell and I ignored it (I assumed it was someone selling something) it was a candidate.

For local candidates, it is very important that they reach out to their constituents and hear concerns, needs and feedback. It's a civil service, they are trying to do a service for their community. If you don't want to answer the door and be actively involved in your community, that's entirely up to you but don't complain about these residents braving the heat and using their time to make an impact on the community!

I am actively involved in the community and volunteer for the County as well. I understand they want to get their message out and make an impact, but i prefer to not have someone knock on my door after 8:30 pm and then stick something on it.

I am perfectly capable of knowing who is running and gaining all the information I need via the local papers and the web.

If you want to advertise, stick something under my mailbox and hold an open house/town hall meeting for those that want face to face interaction.

I do not answer my door for people who I do not know. Have you seen the thread about the SAT guy ?

As someone who has knocked on over 1100 doors so far, I would say the following:
I know you are actively engaged in the community, but that is not the case for a lot of folks. As far as the political season goes, it is still early, with not much attention on it by the media until well in to September. The summer months are a good time to meet and introduce myself to individual homeowners.

At 2/3 of the homes there is no answer at the door. Leaving behind a brochure allows me to introduce myself to those folks. Most houses don't have the mailbox holders. For those that do, many are full of old flyers and bird nests (I've had more than a few fly out as I attempted to put something there!) Leaving something at the door increases the likelihood that it might be seen.

There will be some town halls/debates scheduled, but not until in the Fall. Several HOAs refuse to allow political candidates to rent their facilities.

As someone who has spent the last 12 years in public service (HOA and Planning Commission), I am running for the Board of Supervisors to represent the people of this district. I have to reach out to them any way I can, and door to door is an important way to do it.

    Cliff Keirce
    Candidate, Broad Run District

Well said, Runner. People in the community are teetering on the edge of paranoia from what I gather reading the posts.

That said, I would much rather have a flyer from a candidate running for the local board than to receive a flyer for pizza. Where are the priorities? And better yet, I prefer to meet the candidates face to face as with Cliff Kierce. We spoke for nearly 25 minutes and agreed on most issues. That's better than a town hall!

    Cliff,
I don't mind the flyers. I live in a townhouse and we were eating the night you came by, so I didn't run downstairs. I use face-to-face or flyers or other media for gathering candidate information.

A simple solution if you are going out of town is to have one of your neighbors pick up the flyers or free papers, etc. We do that for each other all the time.

Yesterday while knocking on doors in Ashburn Village, I put one of my brochures in a newspaper holder........and had a swarm of bees come out! Yes, there was a yellow jacket hive in there. I had forgotten I can move so fast!

    Paranoid or Cautious ?

    http://www.loudoun.daily-monitor.com...-robbers/7406/

Armed Robbery at Subway last August

And in our little section of Loudoun (Ashburn, Landsdowne) for 2011:

    Aggravated Assult - 12
    Robbery - 1
    Rape - 7
    Larceny - 194
    Auto Theft - 11
    Burglary - 18 - Last year there were 49 (almost 1 a week) - 3 in Broadlands this year

I only open my door for Girlscout cookies or if I see the Publisher's Clearing house Van parked out front. The candidates can go door to door if they like - that is there choice. My point was that putting a flyer in the door can tip off a crimnal mind that someone is away, etc. Same goes for the newspapers or the other flyers that get stuck on our doors. Tell tale signs of a potential target without having to do much work. I prefer to not be the easy target.
