I think movies is an excellent topic for discussion. Recent movies I've seen and highly recommend include:

Fahrenheit 9/11 -- (whether one agrees or disagrees with Moore's message, it's still good fodder for chatting with the neighbors)

The Terminal - couldn't stop laughing throughout...Hanks never lets one down.

The Notebook -- an inspiration for couples

    Stepford Wives -- Hilarious!

i don't know how far you are willing to drive, but my favorite theater is the Cinema Arts theater in Fairfax (at Fair City "mall"), it's about 45 minutes away. It's a mom & pop theater with an interestingly diverse menu (popcorn to hummus to gourmet sandwiches). They mostly show small or indie films, but always have a blockbuster-type headliner (like a Harry Potter or Spiderman) on the bill, presumably to pay the bills! [:p]

It's not as fancy as Regal or Cinema Deluxe, no stadium seating, (they do have rockers), but it's owned by a real person who actually cares if you enjoyed your movie experience, and that's why I love to go there most of all (especially considering a night out at the movies for two cost upwards of $30 nowadays). The owner often comes in the theater during previews and asks "should we get that one?" and is answered by the amount of applause. Once I saw him give free popcorn to everyone in the neck-aching-first-row-seats, because the theater was so packed that day. It's a nice change from all the lowes, regals, and sonys. :)

here is their website with showtimes, menu, and other info: http://www.cinemaartstheatre.com/
