Hi everyone, over the past few days/weeks there have been several events "teenage pranks" that have many neighbors concerned and wondering what you can do to get involved. I wanted to start this thread as a way to let you know that we are looking into several options for patrolling our community. One of those options is getting the neighborhood watch program up and running, however to have a successful program we need neighbor involvement and participation. I would like to offer that as an invitation to all of you to let us know that you are willing to help. I hope to have (within the next few days) more information about this and what our next step is. We look forward to your participation in this, because it won't work without you.

Thanks for your participation in getting this up and running. I hope that more people in our community who have expressed concern about neighborhood problesm get involved. I hope that when we are able to say its time to patrol that more of our fellow forum readers step up. I hope to get more information and will share it with you when I do. Thanks again for wanting to help.

I'm in Donna. Any new information on this? Is the petition still at the Nature Center or is that gone now?

    Donna,

I'm all for the neighborhood watch program and I applaud your efforts to start such a program. I just wonder why we need one or what would make people react differently with such a program than they do now.

I have no problem picking up the phone and calling the Sheriff's office when I hear cars racing up and down Broadlands Blvd or lighting off fireworks across the Blvd. I also wouldn't have a problem calling the Sheriff's office if I saw a tow truck in the neighborhood and I was suspicious about its activities. I don't need a neighborhood watch program to do that and how would such a program make this any different?

On the other hand, what would make the people who saw a suspicious tow truck in their neighborhood call the Sheriff's office because there's a neighborhood watch program when they wouldn't call without a watch program? Why would these people react any differently?

We are on alert now. We weren't before but everyone who has seen the thread is questioning every tow truck. You are right before I would have not gave it a second look. The watch will adapt as things like this happen.

Thanks -- I guess I wasn't reading your reply correctly. My last development had a neighborhood watch and the only alerts we got about anything happening were the crime reports in the local papers.

Yes, we can post alerts here to make people more aware of ongoing events, but it doesn't take a neighborhood watch to do that. The same people who don't have access to these forums now still won't have access after a neighborhood watch and I don't think too many people are logged on monitoring these forums 24x7. I don't expect the Sheriff's Office to respond any quicker for a neighborhood watch. If they do, I'd like to know why they don't respond quicker for all non-emergency calls!

So, it just boils down to common sense. If anyone sees something suspicious, call the Sheriff's Office. Don't watch the event unfold and then discuss it here -- call the Sheriff's Office! Their non-emergency number is: (703) 777-1021. It's on my speed dial because I use it whenever I feel the need...

Good Post! We need to get more people aware of the forums. Then maybe have a seperate area for community alerts.

The Neighborhood Watch meeting was held last night. Just to give you an update...We are not at the stage of this program (and hopefully we won't need to be) where we need to have neighbor patrols going through the community. What we are doing right now is asking that if you see ANY suspicious behavior please call the non emergency number Greg had posted: (703) 777-1021. Scott is going to be sending out updates on statistics, etc so if you would like to receive them email me and I will forward your name to him to be added to the list serve mailings. Hopefully there will be updates and information posted on the HOA website, as well as suggestions for keeping yourselves and your property safe. I know everyone is busy (as we all are) however the more EYES we have in the community the better off we are. As always, any suggestions are welcome. While we don't have a lot of crime here...we want to keep it that way, so please talk to your neighbors and ask them to be included on the email list to get these updates and suggestions.
