Just saw in the Broadlands newsletter that pizza boxes fall into the NOT recyclable side. Why is that, seems lots of other card board boxes were listed as recyclable?

The recycling program from New Vision is a joke. They "can't" recycle anything that dairy in it, they "can't" recycle the yellow perscription bottles, styrofoam and pizza boxes. Yet - here at work our recycle program takes everything.

I too was surprised at what can and can't be recycled.

The key to making recycling successful is to make it easy for the citizens to recycle. If I have to carefully inspect and wash all my recyclables, I might just decide to trash it instead.

Technically they can be recycled. But only clean boxes. They just probably won't take them so they don't have to shift through and find the clean ones.

You can put them in compost bins though.

New Vision doesn't decide what it can or can't take. That is determined by restrictions imposed upon the trash companies by the recycling centers, in this case Fairfax County.

were these restrictions changed when New Vision got the contract?

The pizza boxes cannot be recycled because they typically have grease on them. The recycling centers cannot take items that are dirty, at least not non-washable items like cardboard. Cans and bottles should be lightly rinsed and dry.
