Refrigerator Repair Service

Can anyone recommend a good one (that doesn't nickel and dime you for everything)?

 

I would try Sterling Appliance. I bought parts from them and the guys were very good at explaining how I would need to install the part. Nice guys to deal with on the phone and in person.

If you are dealing w/a GE refrigerator, start saving for a new one. They are the worst.

 

Last year, I had mine repaired thru the GE appliance service -

My GE ref was below 5 yrs old and had to have the "defroster" replaced. The GE guy said they replace this part free (common problem, I think), and just charged me the $99 service call fee. After a month, I received an offer in the mail for an "extended warranty" service", which I availed of. This year, the ice maker stopped working - they installed a "heater" and it only cost me $25 (my co-pay, per call).

 

What's the general life span of a refrigerator supposed to be? As in, when is it better to simply replace it than repair it?

We highly recommend Sterling Appliances also. There is also a great appliance parts store in Sterling (near Sterling Park's industrial space) called Trible's Appliance Parts. They have over 12 locations in Metro DC, MD, and VA areas.

Trible's also will repair or recommend appliances, I believe. Great service and a knowledgeable staff. You can also shop online for great service!

Thanks for the input. We had Sterling appliance come out the next day and just had to pay the $79 service call. We were able to ask a number of questions of the repairman about appliance lifespan, preventive maintenance tips, etc. to which he was extremely willing to answer and offer advice. He said most refrigerators last about 10-12 years before you really have to pay a great deal to repair them.

One other consideration - buy your refrigerator through Costco. Additional benefits on warranty and if you run into big problems- returning it could be an option. We got caught up in the major LG class action lawsuit for our refrigerator. 5 visits from an LG authorized technician and never able to repair. Refrigerator would not cool, lost food, lost time from work dealing with it. Submitted a claim and was able to get a lot of my money back. Contacted Costco after 4 years and was able to return the refrigerator for a full refund... had to buy a new one but thanks to Costco for standing by their guarantee.

 

My parents had an Admiral for over 30 years and it still worked when they donated it.
